Osaka to Tokyo to Honolulu

April 27, 2025 Sunday
Osaka to Honolulu

We had been gone from Hawaii now for 20 days.

We woke up at 5:00 AM, had a wonderful buffet breakfast at the hotel and were on our way to the Shin-Osaka train station at 9:00 AM.

We changed trains at Tokyo Station and continued on our way to Narita Airport.

Once at the airport, we found the Yamato Transport baggage room where we were relieved to find our 2 suitcases and big box of items we'd bought in Japan while on the tour that we'd sent from the Mito hotel 3 days ago.

We then checked in for our ANA flight to Hawaii which would take off at 8:26 PM.

Our plane landed at Honolulu International Airport at 8:29 AM.

We collected our luggage and was picked up by my brother and returned home to find mom happy to see us.

I was shocked to see our orchid still had flowers blooming after so many weeks.

We unpacked, sorted our laundry, etc. and stayed awake until about 8:30 PM.

I can never sleep on airplanes so I wondered how long I'd been awake.

I had AI figure it out for me. Granted I'm not understanding why it says I've been awake for 27 hours and then also says the Total awake time is 39 hours.

Whatever the case. I wondered how Cory Booker was able to stay awake for 25 hours and 4 minutes in the Senate (March 31st to April 1st) with his symbolic protest against Trump without a bathroom break or food. Granted, I'd been up much longer although I got to eat and use the bathroom and didn't have to give a speech. 😄

However, I did pay for this abuse of my body and brain because it took me over a week to recover from this trip after which I had one week to prepare for a trip in the other direction to see our granddaughter graduate from high school in Illinois.

  1. Barely time for your feet to touch the ground.

  2. Yikes, I know just adjusting from Hawai'i to the Midwest took its toll on me after being on the island for 2 weeks. I can't imagine this trip!

  3. I always said "I can't sleep on planes", but now that I can turn off hearing aids and have total silence, and carry a shawl to wrap around my head/neck I actually do frequently at least nap. Socks, too, warm feet help. Perhaps this is how one can tell they have become an old person? But consider the alternative! Thank you for sharing your adventures.

  5. I can't imagine being awake that long! I would be so groggy. What an unforgettable trip but home is also wonderful. I just killed my orchid, even though I'm home all the time. :(

I cannot imagine how you toted those boxes and suitcases. I had one carry-on and my purse for a 5-day trip to Oregon. Hefting those two items in and out of planes and across airport terminals and then into a rental van and up and down stairs in our b&b rental was enough for me. And it was only ONE WEEK. Art looks like he was just getting started in that last photo you took.

  7. Thank you for all the details of your trip around Japan. I have always wanted to see Japan, as it's so different from my surroundings in Canada, maybe one day I shall visit. I'd love to visit EXPO, looks like good fun. And I'd love to sample all the foods. But I wouldn't be able to stay awake that long, I wouldn't be able to walk in a straight line. But you had a husband there to offer help if needed.

  9. The suitcases look more crowded than the people! When I worked, I learned I could only stay awake for 26 hours, then I'd get nauseated. Glad you made it back home ok! Linda in Kansas

  15. Japan is not 16 time zones away from Hawaii so I'm not sure I would believe that answer. But I do know in the past that we've had 28 hours of flying, including layovers, to get to the Philippines in the wee morning hours so I've definitely pushed close to 40 hours of awake time in the past. As I mentioned earlier (in a later post), it gets harder to do the older I get.
