I'd heard from several friends and relatives how amazed they were with snow and ice sculptures they'd seen in Hokkaido, Japan and Harbin, China. So what the heck! We decided we could give it a try. We've lived in Chicago for 35 years before moving back to Hawaii in 2008. We've experienced cold weather. Buuut... that was 18 years ago! My blood has thinned out.
When I told our daughter, Tiffany about this plan, she gave me a pair of spare snow boots that our granddaughter had barely used. She also loaned me 2 sets of thermal undergarments. And yes, I still had three winter coats, a rather homely yarn hat, scarves and gloves. She also sent us hand warmers. I'd never even heard of hand warmers before.
And then Linda from Kansas had commented that these were wonderful to survive the freezing cold.
Wellll... now I was getting worried. How cold is it going to be? Art warned that I was only used to going from car to house in winter. I told him I've shoveled snow. He reminded me that was decades ago.
UH oh...
OK...
So I packed a lot of clothes for layering... then the boots.... two different kinds of winter coats... omiyage (gifts for relatives in Sendai and Tokyo) and suddenly we had our luggage and extra totes stuffed to the gills. I won't even go into Art's big boots, etc.
Anyway...
Would you believe we did not get into the right line at the airport check in? After waiting forever in line, they told us we should have gone into the precheck line. 🙄
They asked if I had a computer so I took out my iPad and put it in the bin.
Would you believe my Kindle and journal got flagged and we had another long wait?
We met up with our tour group and found Micah (Tohoku Travel escort) who we'd traveled with last year.
The flight was fine. We were on Japan Airlines. Granted we didn't love being at the bulkhead because you couldn't have your backpack accessible since it had to be stored overheard. But oh well... the seats had been assigned to us by the travel agency. We'll just have to be careful about stating our wishes next time.
We flew from Honolulu to Haneda, Japan and arrived at 4:04 PM but 9:04 PM in Hawaii. Haneda is the other large airport in Tokyo which is on the main island of Honshu.
OK... We couldn't resist having our photo taken next to Godzilla at Haneda.
Since we had a bit of a wait there, we also took the opportunity to mail our two boxes to my aunt and cousin in Tokyo and Sendai. That was super helpful and reasonable! They both received the boxes the following morning which is amazing!
From Haneda we had to catch a short flight to Chitose in Hokkaido which is the northernmost island of Japan.
We noted the Japan time when we arrived in Chitose and boarded our tour bus which took us to our hotel. It was called Ana Crowne Plaza Hotel Chitose.
We knew from our schedule that we now needed to pack these two small "blue bags" for a one night stay because we would only be at the next hotel for one night. Our big suitcases would meet us on the following night.
By the time we packed our bags and organized ourselves and our brains, it was 12:30 AM (Japan time).
Arrrghhh...
I took a melatonin and hoped I would get some sleep and not be on Hawaii time.
And this was our first day.
It didn't cross my mind to say this earlier but my college daughter uses rechargeable mittens to survive winter with warm hands. She plugs them in at night along with her laptop, her phone, her ipad, etc., etc.
ReplyDeletei have mitts like that. They work well when I have to keep my hand out and extended while holding onto my cane in the cold. The weather is changing, so I should require them too much longer.
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed Day 1 of your trip as Japan is my absolute favorite place to visit. Looking forward to traveling with you the rest of the way. (PatM)
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Pat! It's so great hearing from you. This was definitely a different sort of trip we took from any of these others that I can still sort of remember. Art could prove me wrong since my memory is horrible these days.
Delete🥰
DeleteIt sounds like a survival exercise rather than a holiday. I hope you managed to sleep.
ReplyDeleteGosh travel can be a headache.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to hear about every single day! Handwarmers are very popular in my area - especially at outdoor sporting events. Traveling does make for long days and you always see what you could have done to make things smoother. But those are some great smiles when you reached godzilla!
ReplyDeleteHard to know what's an electronic these days. I wouldn't think of a Kindle that way. In England I got in trouble for not pulling my hair dryer out of my luggage. I'd never had to do that before! One of my pick up people at the grocery store has a puffy coat that is heated. If I go to a cold place, I'm going to buy myself one!
ReplyDeleteYou crazy travelers. You're living the life we all thought about living when we retired.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to more of your travel story.
ReplyDeleteIt is almost like being there with you. So far, so good!
ReplyDeleteIt seems to me the airline would have asked if you wanted to fly in the bulkhead seats. They're definitely not everyone's cup of tea.
ReplyDeleteYou two look so darn cute next to Godzilla! Now, how many times will you ever hear that in your life? LOL!
ReplyDeleteTraveling is complicated.
ReplyDeleteWhat a busy way to get to your first stop. Godzilla looks like all of the angry Democrats put into one creature. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you're fighting the elements here to get where you want to go.
ReplyDeleteThe first day of a trip is the worst! I'm not looking forward to the first day of our trip to Greece in April. The rest of it should be fun. It's with Road Scholars.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your ice photos. Our youngest daughter lived in Harbin for 4 years and managed the sub zero weather fine.
I love your Godzilla photo. My retired tea/Users/delainezody/Desktop/649171144_10226233763909382_1694166582575532832_n.jpgcher friend and her husband are also in Japan and she just posted a picture with Godzilla but her's is in.a different location.
ReplyDeleteOkay, that did not work. I had hoped to post her photo into my comment but it appears to have just made a mess of the message. Feel free to delete it. I just wanted you to know that I am seeing lots of Godzillas today!
ReplyDeleteWhy were your kindle and laptop flagged? Did they give a reason? A Scottish lady just posted pictures of a huge inferno that completely destroyed an historic building in Glasgow. The cause was the lithium batteries sold by a vape shop on the ground floor!
ReplyDeleteWe have pineapple blood k and are not used to that cold weather! I'm sending you warm thoughts. Aloha
ReplyDeleteGoing from one climate that you are used to ... to another is so hard. I have handwarmers with me in the winter, but as long as I am moving, it seems my hands don't get cold.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is some trip you planned for! I cannot imagine!
I thought about your luggage letters when I fly to New Orleans. As I had to second guess myself
ReplyDeleteGot my son a shark luggage piece when he realized he didn't have one of his own for our beach trip. He was so sad but very happy when I came up with the solution
