I'm sure you've all seen this in the news about the man throwing a large rock at a Hawaiian monk seal. I was surprised to see it was even in the BBC news. It's also been on our local news constantly since it happened.
Local people here are furious that a male tourist from Seattle, walking along the beach with a significant other decided to do this very stupid, cruel thing. He barely missed hitting the seal within inches.

Hawaiian monk seals are among the most endangered marine mammals in the world. They are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the International Union for Conservation Nature (IUCN).
But I'm wondering WHAT in the world motivated him to do this. People in Hawaii are angry and want him held accountable and prosecuted.
I think it's awesome that Kaylee, a young teenager saw this happening, recorded and reported it to the authorities.
I keep wondering why. Why do people think hurting a living thing is the thing to do.
I think too about that school that was bombed in Iran.
On February 28, 2026, a missile strike destroyed the Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab, Hormozgan province, southern Iran, killing over 150 people, primarily schoolgirls aged 7–12, along with teachers and parents. Multiple reports, including investigations by Amnesty International, indicate the strike was part of a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation.
There's not a whole lot said about this now. Maybe it bothers me even more since I'm a retired teacher of 6-7 year olds.
Apparently, it wasn’t an intentional hit by the US and Israel. They made a (oops!) mistake due to outdated information. But does it make it OK?
Right now... my anger is with people who think it's OK or justified to hurt or kill others... human beings or a defenseless animal.
That man is a low-life no matter how rich he might be.

ReplyDeleteIt is sickening to think of someone who deliberately sets out to hurt an animal. Children do tease them, but anyone past about four years old should know better. I recall my daughter, at that age, coming sobbing to me saying "Grandpa say no, loud!" When I asked her what she had been doing, it was pulling the dog's ears. She never did anything like that again, although she did throw herself down beside our dog and wipe her eyes on the ears when reprimanded.

ReplyDeleteMean and stupid. It reminds me of those mean and stupid kids who killed 15 albatrosses at Kaena Point for no good reason other than they were stupid and mean entitled kids. What I really don't like is how this pits locals against tourists - and 99.9% of tourists who come here are so happy to be here and not destructive.

DeleteBut you’re absolutely right that almost ALL tourists who come here are welcomed warmly and treat the islands with respect.
One of my sayings for a situation like this is you can't rationalize the irrational. He may not have thrown the rock if he had known it was a protected species, but anyone who would wantonly harm a creature for no reason may not be too concerned about protected species.

ReplyDeleteThe bombing. I personally feel that this is what happens when you put people with no training or experience in positions of power that can result in this type of violence. It was an "accident" waiting to happen. There was no double checking or verifying before performing this action. And this makes me embarassed for my country and disgusted. For shame.
These are the kinds of questions that keep me up at night. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteI hope the rock thrower is fined, jailed and banned from all of the Hawaiian Islands. He is evil. Bombing the school was horrid; the U.S. is supposed to have better intelligence info. I'm waiting for the day to get 47ers out of D.C. and straighten up the Supreme Court. Linda in Kansas

They actually think Hitler was a positive force. They want the country to be White and ruled by the military. Wow…. That totally freaked me out.
