Here it is! My FIRST sewing project on my NEW Bernina! (Ummm... It's the one on the right.)
I decided it was time to try out my new sewing machine. I left my other Bernina with my daughter in Illinois because she didn't have one (she is a very creative crafter) and should have one.
After much agonizing, I finally decided to buy another non-fancy (not computerized) Bernina 1008. They call it the "workhorse." The saleslady tried to get me to buy the fancier one but I stayed simple. Still, this is an improvement on my first machine. It can do a few more stitches and they've moved the thread cutter. I'm having to figure some stuff out by myself. Like... Where the heck am I supposed to put all the doohickeys (from the plastic bag) in the accessory box? Why didn't they draw me a picture in the Instruction Manual? When I went for my lesson, the teacher didn't know either. Sheesh! She said the machine was so simple I didn't really need another lesson on it. Uh hunh... riiight....
I've broken my first needle on this new machine, too. The material I chose for the washing machine and dryer feels tough like canvas. My needle couldn't hack it. I don't even know what kind of cloth it is anymore. When I finished the cover for the washer and put it on, I was surprised at the difference in color. The Hawaiian sun had bleached the material on the dryer (left).
I took the measurements and made the dryer cover in Illinois for my mom 4 years ago. It ended up being a bit tight but it did fit. This time, I took measurements and kept fitting it on the washer so I'd be sure it would fit easily. I guess that's why it's good to have fittings on the actual body.
I'm so pleased with myself. I know it isn't anything attractive but it's quite practical. My mom just can't stand to have her machines get dirty and the plastic covers tear to shreds within weeks.
Now I've got some left over material so I think I might make a cover for my printer. Hmmm... what else needs a cover around here?
I've never seen a washer and dryer wearing dresses. Good job, Kay.
ReplyDeleteWell done you - that's quite a piece of tailoring. Perhaps a suit for Art next? I'm amazed at the difference in colour, your sun must be very strong indeed.
ReplyDeleteDina: I guess it does seem a little funny but our washer and dryer are outside on the lanai (patio) so my mom is always worried about the dust and rain getting on it.
ReplyDeleteAmanda: Thank you, thank you. A suit for Art? Uhhh.. Amanda, I'll expect you to come over here from England to walk me through that one.... After you tell me where all the bobbins and stuff go in my accessory box.
I think it IS pretty; I like the colours you chose and the machines looked so tidy 'dressed' that way.
ReplyDeleteI'm envious--between farming and messy kids, my machines are always running, no time for covers!
Maybe next you could make a pretty bag with compartments for all your Bernina accessories, and leave the box for tools instead? LOL
Kay;
ReplyDeleteGood job..your appliances look so dressy. Mine are always in use, it seems. With Kevin working on the farm, we're always washing something.
You are too funny! I love to sew too, I bought a simple surger a while back when I was doing window treatments in Ohio. I love the simple machines, they are so easy to fix and keep in good condition.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget the toaster cover, and since your using your machine so much you should make a simple cover for that. I wish we lived close to one another, we do a sewing days out!
Hey, Kay, you can come over to my place and sew covers for my washer and dryer. They sit outside in the patio, where they get paw prints from the cats and dirt and dust from the garden. Ugh! Your mom would look at my machines with disdain.
ReplyDeletedon't get carried away, lol-I can just picture your hubby with a cover, your mom, etc. I've never heard of a cover for a washer/dryer but why not. I just wipe mine off when it gets dirty-what a unique idea-another lol. enjoyed your post-I think you did a great job-if you need a part time retirement job you could hire out to make covers for the washer/dryers in all of Hawaii. Smile!
ReplyDeleteI have never seen covers for the washer and dryer...good job. I bet that material did break your needle..
ReplyDeleteKay I am so impressed, I have never seen a cover for a dryer before and the fact that you had no pattern is even more impressive. What a great idea!
ReplyDeleteGood for you. I haven't seen the good side of my sewing machine in about 5 years and that was to make a pot holder. Might have to dust the thing off and make another one.
ReplyDeleteKay, excellent job!! How creative you are. No pattern is even more amazing!
ReplyDeleteI am impressed! I have never seen such covers before! And what an undertaking for your first project. Lets see...covers for the toaster, mixer...
ReplyDeletewasher cozies! cool, Kay. Aloha-
ReplyDeleteMy mom, God rest her soul, used a Singer foot pedal model most of her life and finally got an electric and loved it.
ReplyDeleteI think you have a kind of industrial machine to sew canvas. Not sure... but don't think mom ever sewed canvas.
You might check out these air conditioning covers. They have big ones that would cover something like this...if you break enough needles you might want to investigate.

i'm sure you've done a wonderful job for your first time. I've always wanted to try sewing but somehow I never do. Congratulations on your first successful sewing project!
ReplyDeleteI figured the washer and dryer were outside when I saw the covers. That makes sense. Otherwise I would be worried about you and your mother!
ReplyDeleteGood job, by the way.
I have to admire and am jealous. Sewing lessons 3X and I finally waved the surrender white flag!!
ReplyDeleteYour covers are sooo cute! Who would have eveer thought of covering the washer and dryer...you're giving me ideas. Makes me want to pull out my sewing machine. Just kidding. good job, Kay.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea and given they are outside this is perfect. That isnt a simple sewing job Kay, well done!
ReplyDeleteI think they look fantastic. Great job! My washer and dryer are ashamed of themselves now, as they are completely naked.
