I would like to take today to thank you all for being my wonderful friends. I'm sorry that I'm such a spotty blogger these days since I'm madly trying to finish this family genealogy project before our trip to Japan when I plan to present a finished album to our relatives there. My children have seen most of the rough draft and are quite surprised and moved by what they've seen. It's been extremely rewarding but now I'm in the midst of fine tuning before I can print.
Here's a fun comic strip from today's Sunday Star Bulletin newspaper. (Click to enlarge.) I have to laugh because when I first arrived to teach in Illinois, people (not just children, mind you) told me I spoke rather good English coming from Hawaii. I'd explain that Hawaii is the 50th state and we actually spoke English. Then they'd ask me if we used American money in Hawaii. I'm glad that by the time I left most people knew better.
Oh my Gosh! Really? My relatives used to think Hawaii was somewhere in Europe. I won't say who but they were surprised when I told them I got off a troop ship in Hawaii and they knew I was going to Japan. LOL

ReplyDeleteMy husband used to think that Hawaii was an island off the southern California coast, only a few miles away -- because that's how maps show it and he wasn't bothering to see the box around it. We got into a fight over it once, in our early days, that led to a trip to the library for an atlas that showed a map of the Pacific. Weird now, to think we had *nothing better to do* than fight over where Hawaii was! ROFL Oh to have those days back again.
I just laughed to read Dina's comment! I used to live in Switzerland, and when American friends heard that, the first almost *all* of them said was "I didn't know you spoke Swedish!" I'd point out that Swedish was spoken in Sweden, not Switzerland, then I'd get, "Oh you speak SWISS!" Which is just as funny, when the Swiss have four national languages, none of them called 'Swiss'. Drove me batty.
Good luck with finishing your project, and with wowing your family with it when you see them again!

ReplyDeleteThat comic strip was funny, but I never got that reaction from people when I lived in California and New York back in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Perhaps, it's because I lived in large metropolises like LA, SF, and NYC.

ReplyDeleteThe whole Hawaii-really-is-a-state thing is funny but also distrubing. I'm sure that you, like me, being teachers, found ignorance was often the enemy, and that overcoming it was our purpose. When people willfully hang on to ignorance and use it to attack others, it is unacceptable.

ReplyDeleteWhen I moved to Hawaii a rep from my cell phone company argued with me that Hawaii was not part of the US and she questioned my intelligence!
I remember when Hawaii and Alaska became states -- I was 12 years old and remember seeing all the hoopla on the news and in the press.

ReplyDeleteThere used to be a TV show called Street Smarts. They devoted one whole episode to interviewing people on the street and asking how many states there were. Very few got it right!
Congratulations Kay on two years blogging! Funny comic strip. Great about your genealogy project - they are not easy to do and they take a lot of time. That is a big achievement. Wonderful for your kids and grandkids. And I always thought your English was good too, he he. I have been to Hawaii many times - great place.
ReplyDeleteMy mom told this about one time when she and my dad were flying to Hawaii, the stewardess (tells you how long ago this was) said she would give a free drink to anyone who had a Hawaiian coin on them. My dad held up his hand and showed her a quarter. He was the only one on who did. Ha Ha. My dad is smart!
