Would You Believe?

We're leaving for Japan on Monday. The tickets are bought, reservations made. Gifts have been chosen and packed for the trip along with the genealogy albums and DVDs I've slaved over. The suitcases have been packed for a week. We've got people scheduled to be at the house. We're picking my aunt up tomorrow morning to stay with us overnight so we can leave the following morning together VERY EARLY. We were ready.... more than ready.

And then it happened.

My mother's knee had already been bothering her for the past month but had been improving so that she could walk pretty comfortably. We were hopeful. Then as she was coming down the steps this afternoon, she was crippled by excruciating pain out of nowhere. She could barely walk with us almost carrying her. I gave her a pain pill and we took her to the emergency room at Kaiser.

I have to tell you that I'm really impressed with the Kaiser Permanente emergency room. The wait wasn't horrible. They took her in right away, got her X-rayed and was more than accommodating during our time there. There was a Patient Advocate who said she'd try to contact somebody about finding a low-cost wheelchair that we might be able to bring with us on our trip (although they're closed on Sundays). We thought we might have to cancel the trip. That would have been extremely expensive but what can you do?

The X-rays show nothing was broken but it didn't mean there wasn't some kind of soft tissue damage. They wrapped her leg in a substantial leg brace and prescribed medication for the pain.

So the trip is still on. What would we have done if this happened tomorrow?

  1. This is what could happen to David, with his history of knee pain!!! Our agent told us that if we cancel on or after the departure date, we cannot get a refund!!!

Oh, I feel so sorry for your mother. Please give my best regards to her. I hope she manages to enjoy the trip anyway. It will be nice to see her relatives. Take care.

  2. I guess I have to believe this if you say so, but it is hard.
    Good luck!
But great that you were so ready ahead of time and had time to take care of this new medical challenge.

  3. Kudos to the ER for their wonderful assistance to your family!!! I know how disappointed your mom would have been to miss this trip. I will keep her in my prayers that she manages well with all this and enjoys herself in spite of it.

    Bon Voyage!!!!!!!!

  4. It would probably have been much worse if this had happened whilst you were away, but what rotten luck for you all. Still, I'm sure that you'll all still manage to have a wonderful trip.

  5. Your poor Mom. Hope she's better soon. Did you get a wheelchair?

I hope you are carrying the albums and dvds on as hand luggage? You know what airlines are like.

    Have a wonderful time.

  8. If your mom is ok with doing some travel time in a wheelchair, then I think the trip will be good. Some people will not be seen in a wheelchair. I wish you the best

  9. Oh my goodness, your poor mother! But now I'm convinced you're all being watched over: what if she'd fallen down the steps? I'm glad she's safe and was cared for so well.

On the bright side, this may be a good thing in the end; we have family members in wheelchairs, plus our own special-needs kids, and always are treated with special attention which makes traveling better. As long as your mother feels able to travel and isn't in any pain, it's nice to know that she'll be looked after with extra care on the way.

Thank goodness too, that she doesn't live on her own -- my mother-in-law does; she refuses to go live with anyone though several of us have room and have asked her. We worry for her.

  10. Kay, terrible news, but lots of people travel in wheelchairs...however call ahead so they can have a lift up into the plane to and from destination, as stairs would be difficult. murphy's law?

  16. well tell your mom she has a cheering squad online to wish her well. I took my mom to a family wedding in Minnesota and the airlines were very helpful even provided a person to push the wheel chair and help us make the connections. Just need to be told ahead. May all work out for your trip-you've worked so hard.

  19. Wow. That made for a traumatic time. You can request wheelchairs at the airports at least if you don't get one. Fortunately you will be visiting family so there will be help and people to be with your mom.
I send my hopes and best wishes for a wonderful trip free from too many worries.
