What's the difference?
Eastern (Standard) King Size Mattress: 76 inches wide x 80 inches long.
Western (California) King Size Mattress: 72 inches wide x 84 inches long.
Art helped me remember which is which by saying the King is for shorter, chubbier people. The California would be for thinner, taller people.
Art and I figured the Eastern would be better (OK... never mind, it was me all along) because we'd have more space between us. I go to bed later than he does because he's up early to do that marathon training thing in the dark when the sun isn't beating up on you. I also like to read to make me drowsy. Being a little farther apart, the light won't bother him as much. The added bonus is that we don't have to turn the mattress around. Don't even get me started on what mattress to buy. All I can say is don't get the Serta Vera Wang latex mattress because all the hype they tell you about it springing back and not sagging... not true. Latex is a layer of the mattress. The padded part on top of it sags. Sheesh! Like I said... don't get me started...

Anyway, because the Eastern King is almost square, we just turn ourselves 'round and 'round with each sheet change to prevent the sagging to get too deep in one area.
Granted when anybody comes to our bedroom, they must think we're odd to see our pillows facing in every direction.
Ah well...
Good that you explained as i was really confused to see pillows facing in different directions...lol !One good thing is that you can easily readjust your reading light accordingly.
ReplyDeleteWhat a creative solution!
ReplyDeleteHow do you decide who has to sleep next to the headboard when the pillows are "sideways"?
Kay, you and Art have a very creative solution to your bed situation! Hope it all works out!!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't that make you disoriented at night? Like, don't you ever "get up on the wrong side of bed"?
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of you rotating yourselves about the bed rather than turning the mattress. Don't the pillows fall on the floor when you haven't got a headboard to hold them in place? I hadn't realised that there were so many different sizes of mattress. I'm sure that there aren't so many choices here.
ReplyDeletea square bed, well we still sleep on a queen size although I added a latex 4 inch foam pad with memory to us last night. The bed is taller but firmer. Hubby says he can't turn over at night but he'll figure that out.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of using all sides. My butt must be heavier. My wife has had to sleep in a recliner for a long time so we don't sleep together. And when I got home from the hospital in 2008 she had purchased a 4 inch thick foam or latex pad that was not suppose to settle. But it does.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are nuts!!! LOL. We have a Calif King Simmons mattress with box springs, which we purchased in early September. Almost 2 months later, it's still the same - no sagging whatsoever. This is great, as David and I are very heavy and need good back support.
ReplyDeletei just got a square bed..u gave me an idea..sleep in all directions :)
ReplyDeleteI love that sleeping in all directions idea, Kay, although I have the same question as Amanda about the pillows falling onto the floor! Your reading light is perfect for moving around, though.
ReplyDeleteLearn something new every day. I've heard of the California King mattress but never knew the difference.

Well, the older I get, the squarer I get, so maybe that would be the perfect bed for me!!! Have a beautiful day, Kay!!

Kathy G: I guess I'm always the one near the headboard. I don't know why, I guess because I don't mind it.
ReplyDeleteDina: You'd think we would (get disoriented), but we haven't had that problem... yet. And nope, we haven't gotten up on the wrong side of the bed yet either.
Amanda: The pillows haven't fallen off yet and we've been doing this a while.
Abe: I have yet to find the perfect bed. I wonder is the Tempurpedic is really that amazing.
Gigi: At two months, we didn't have much sagging either.
Betty: This mattress cost almost $3,000. (Everything is more expensive in Hawaii.) I can't see buying a new mattress every two years. It's so aggravating. I think what we might do next is to turn the mattress upside down and put a foam topping on it.
this gave me a good chuckle Kay, I've never heard of anyone rotating like this, lol.
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful solution - well done :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun idea. Never would have thought of that.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a fun way to prevent a very real problem,I love it!
ReplyDeleteKay;
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing. I sit on my bed more then Jim does. So my side gets indented more then his does.
Great idea with the lamp.
I'll have to try!
Thnaks for the compliment on my blog. I liked the picture because it looks similar outside my window. Well it did, but a lot of the leaves on my property are already down. But accross the street is still bountiful!
Say hello to Art and your Mom!
Ha! That looks hilarious! You guys are so fun.
ReplyDeleteWell, I think I found something about which we can't agree. I would never be able to put up with sleeping "the wrong way"!
ReplyDeleteLinda: Not even if it gives you a different perspective on things?
ReplyDelete:-)
Oh Kay! You just gave me the biggest laugh of my day! I could never change my position on the bed or I would wake up during the night wondering where in the world I was. I'm still giggling! You are so funny, but what an incredible idea! I am still laughing, though.
ReplyDeleteWhat a creative solution -- although like the others I want to know how you keep your pillows on the bed.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I would survive this kind of arrangement. I am often up and moving before I wake and I tend to walk into walls. I think it would be a whole lot worse of my orientation was always different when I got out of bed. I'd probably get up to go to the bathroom, stumble into the closet, and who knows what kind of mess I'd find when I finally came to!
Oh -- we love our mattress, We bought it from Wu and Sons right there in Oahu. It is memory foam and we've had it for two years now without a sag, and as you know, neither of us are light weights.
ReplyDeleteQuilly: OK... next time... Memory foam it is!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I love it!
ReplyDeleteYour bed certainly got a discussion going. :)
ReplyDeleteDina: I love it! We do spend a third of our lives in beds so it's worth thinking about, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteUmmm... I just asked Art about being disoriented and he confessed that if he gets up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, he does have to think about where he is.
Shane wakes early so he sleeps closest to the bathroom. This way when he wakes he doesn't disturb me. If I go to bed first and fall asleep on his side of the bed he will WAKE me and make me move over! LOL he is such a creature of habit! I should try this just to give him a hard time:)We are currently bed price shopping. It is harder than it would seem!
ReplyDeleteThe memory foam IS that fantastic. we got a Keetsa mattress here in SF and just love it. It's a memory foam that is organic and it comes in a box, making it perfect to move into our tiny studio. Our queen size memory foam was about half the price of yours.
ReplyDeleteAs an aside, this is coming from a woman who has slept on a waterbed for 35 years and didn't know how she was going to adapt to a regular mattress again.
