Breast Feeding in Public

A while back there was a big deal about Breast Feeding in a  Texas Target store.  Someone tried to breast feed their baby in the women's clothing department and she was asked to go into a fitting room to finish nursing her infant.

This prompted a nationwide support demonstration with other mothers going into Target to nurse their babies.  It is lawful in Texas to nurse babies in public which is a good thing.

I don't know how I feel about this situation.

Tiffany and Jonathan 1979
I nursed both my children for 9-10 months.  It was a very rewarding, wonderful experience and I really felt I was doing what was best for Tif and Jon.  I was sad when Jon decided too early to drink from a cup instead like his older sister.

I don't remember finding it a horrible hardship to find a private place to nurse them in public.  There were nursing stations at Disneyland.  There were bathrooms, fitting rooms, the car.  Somehow I managed.  I don't remember feeling a terrible need to do it in public in front of everybody.  I understand some people are a little uncomfortable with it.

My daughter had something called a hooter hider.  That worked very well for her.

I wish everybody could feel it is a very natural, very beautiful thing to be encouraged and welcomed.  However, it's not always the case.

So I don't know...

What do you think?

  1. I saw a woman nurse her baby on a bus! She did not cover her breast with a cloth as my daughter did when she was breast feeding her 2 kids. Although breast feeding is perfectly normal, I feel women should try to be modest and cover their breast with a cloth.

  2. I agreee with Gigi. My daughter breastfed all four of her girls for two years each. I don't recall her ever whipping a boob out in public.

Its not that breast feeding is unnatural. It is that there are too many leches in the world to be so public about it.

I feel the same way about risky clothing.

    BTW your kids are adorable.

  3. I agree with the comments above. I breastfed my baby until he was 9 months old and I never found it a problem. I think it might even be easier now, "hooter hider", that's funny!

  4. Matthew hated the cover ups I tried. He wanted to see what was going on around him! He would then make it a game. I was/ am very modest. I planned my outings around his feeding schedule. Only a few times did I need to feed him and I went into dressing rooms or someones bedroom or something. I never feed him in a bathroom. I thought that was gross. I admit I get embarrassed when I see someone breast feeding.

  5. I agree with Dianne. Although I have no personal problem with women breastfeeding in public, there are so many sexual predators in the world it makes no sense to give them one more excuse. No woman wants to be attacked while caring for a new infant, just to exercise her "rights" does she?

  7. The name cracks me up but the hooter hider seems the perfect answer for all concerned.

  8. I seem to agree with the majority....I think it is fine to breastfeed wherever you need to, but it doesn't hurt to do it as modestly as possible. It seems crazy to me that it is something there are laws about.

  9. I breastfed long ago, and I used a diaper (they were all made of cloth in those days) to drape over his head and my breast. It never seemed to be a problem back then. At least I don't remember it. These days, however, everybody has an opinion.

  11. I admit I am a bit squeamish about public breastfeeding, even when I was with my own daughter and she was covered up. But then I had a terrible time breastfeeding my two kids. Jill was very poor at it and I had to supplement her to keep her growing. I had pain and bleeding with both kids, and gave up after about three months with each. It was not something I could have ever been comfortable with in public.

  13. Quite simply I don't think people should do something that makes other people really uncomfortable, whether it's in public or at home. That's simply good manners. There are always ways round it. Here in the UK there was a big campaign, many years ago now, with the result that many stores offer breast feeding facilities. Like Linda, I never enjoyed breastfeeding and kept going just long enough for my boys to get the benefit, then stopped with relief.

  14. HOORAY for breastfeeding and apple pie! I think a tad of cover is "polite."
24 years ago, breastfeeding was so charming, that I saw a breastfeeder for the daddy! It was like a bib with ribbon-edged circles with a hole. The left-out dad was supposed to put on the bib, and place a baby's bottle through the hole and feel included.
'Twas a pretty good joke and laugh.

  15. I'm currently nursing my 3rd baby - nursed my 1st two as well.

I have a nursing cover (aka hooter hider) to use when I need to nurse in public, but when I nurse in public, it's usually in a restroom or a far off corner not in the view of the general public.

I have seen other moms who have no problems nursing in plain view of others, even w/out a nursing cover, and I personally have no problem with it.
