Last night, the fireworks were pretty loud as usual and there were still quite a few neighbors with illegal fireworks going full blast.
There is a new Hawaii fireworks law in effect, FINALLY! I saw this on the Honolulu News and Opinion website:
It was still loud though and the smoke was terrible. People with asthma have a terrible time coping with the air pollution. Animals have a hard time with the loud explosions. There are always stories of accidents involving children.
I'm glad the state has finally done something about this. This is a good way to start the new year.
The economy seems to be looking up. They say there will be many more jobs in 2012. Our family has enough to eat and shelter over our heads. There are challenges ahead for everyone in the family, but we're glad we can support each other. I want to thank you all for being such an important part of my life.
A $25 fireworks permit, available from the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) and at Satellite City Halls, allows residents 18 and older to set off up to 5,000 firecrackers. (The permit must be displayed where firecrackers are used.) Possession and use of fountains, sprinklers, aerial fireworks and other consumer fireworks are illegal. Firecrackers may only be used on holidays, including New Year’s Eve, Chinese New Year, Fourth of July and other cultural events approved by the HFD on a case-by-case basis.

There were very few fireworks in our neighbourhood this year, thank goodness. I guess they're just too expensive. We watched the London fireworks on television - phenomenal!

ReplyDeleteI woke to the sound of firecrackers, looked at the clock and realized it was 2012 right here at home. They went on for a long time, it seemed to me, but I'm awake and refreshed after a good night's sleep. I think of all the hung-over crowd and thank God I don't do that any more... :-)

ReplyDeleteWe had very few fireworks in the neighborhood and the city is very strict about them. I'm lucky to be able to see wonderful displays from the Space Needle. It lasts about a half hour and then that's the end of fireworks in Seattle, for which I'm very grateful -- and so is Sam Schnauzer!! I really hate fireworks and they are illegal here except for the big shows...I see no reason for them...
ReplyDeleteWow! That's a lot of smoke! The pic looks like a burning fountain (illegal). Kansas would get rich if they had the $25 permit. I'm not sure the "permit required" will decrease the number of neighborhood displays. A total outlaw within the Kansas City metro limits has finally dropped the number in the neighborhoods down...and that took 20 years! Happy Quieter New Year Week! DrumMajor

ReplyDeleteWe live in a rural area and neighbors on the lake set off lovely fireworks displays on New Years and Independence Day. It is fun to watch and enjoy and not have to handle the fire. I didn't notice as much smoke last night as you are showing in your picture. It is fun to hear the booms.

ReplyDeleteWe had many loud and obnoxious fireworks in our neighborhood last night. My husband asked where they were coming from. I said, "The low rent district." We are always amazed at how much money must be spent by folks who live in the low income apartments near us on fireworks. We would never waste our money on fireworks, but it seems they must spend a fortune on them.
Very interesting information about permits for fireworks, thanks for sharing that. We had quite a bit here...all night long...and earlier this morning.
ReplyDeleteBrings back memories of when the kids were small. We were right out there doing it too. Those days are long gone, everybody's grown now. And, Jace is too young to beg to shoot fireworks.

We didn't see, or hear, and new year fireworks this year, though I did see the new year in for the first time for many years, since we took our Peruvian visitors to the village party.
