Preventing Food Poisoning With Your Dishwasher

I saw this on Yahoo about preventing food poisoning by cleaning everything in your dishwasher.  During the drying cycle, the temperature in your dishwasher reaches 170 degrees and that is supposed to be enough to sterilize whatever you put in it.

There is a certain someone I love who uses their dishwasher as a dish rack and rarely turns it on.

I am posting this as a hint that this person should use the dishwasher to help a certain someone not get an upset stomach so often.

I've purposely bought Corelle and other dishwasher safe everyday kitchenware so that I can throw it into the dishwasher.  I also throw in our sponges, cutting boards and dish washing pads, not to mention sink screens.  I don't turn the dishwasher on every night.  I usually save up for two or three days and then wash them all together.

So now then, Sweetie... I hope you'll listen to somebody who loves you and use that darn dishwasher.  I'll buy you a much better, cheaper dish rack the next time we visit.

  1. You are absolutely right, Kay!. The thing is: I have no dishwasher, but I do wash my sponges and cloths in my washing machine.
You are very wise to use the dishwasher.

  2. I wash my sponges and scrubbers in there too but you know I don't use the high heat much. Probably should...thank you.

  3. I have a dishwasher and never use it. I would probably have to replace the hoses it has been so long.
I LOVE to wash dishes. The warm soapy water, the transition from yucky to clean is just so rewarding. Yep, I am weird.

  4. I have to admit we use our dishwasher as a dish drainer, too. I always use the same dishes and hubby uses the same ones. I love soapy water and getting my hands clean that way. We rent our apartment and would never have chosen to have a dishwasher in the first place.

  6. I have never had a dishwasher, human or machine, well my husband did them yesterday actually I forgot, its a rare occasion, I will remember this valuable advice, should I ever have one which isn't very likely!
I have no room for one!

  7. I run my dishwasher every night after dinner and use the high heat wash and dry and sani-rinse cycles. The one thing I do not put in the dishwasher is my wine and water goblets -- they get spotty in the dishwasher, so I wash them by hand.

  8. Arkansas Patti -- Come on up to Kansas City! My portable dishwasher just blew it's adapter nozzle to the sink.
(When I have time, I enjoy ironing like you do dishwashing.)
Rental properties are $200 more per month if they have a dishwasher. I've had half-size or full size portables, which have cutting board tops to add more workspace.
I fill it up until I run out of forks, then run a full dishwasher.
The repair guy is coming this week.

  9. This seems to have two defined sides...those who never use a dishwasher and those who wouldn't be without one. I am in the the second category...I would croak without one. I had no problem living without a stove...a dishwasher is a different story for me.

  10. I will have to write a post about my dishwasher experience. I wouldn't have a kitchen w/o one and we sometimes run it two or three times in a day if I'm doing a lot of cooking and baking. The very idea of a sink full of dirty dishes just makes me go crazy.

  11. I never thought aout throwing the cleaning pads in the dishwasher. I usually chuck them out. Good tip. I wash my dog and bird dishes in the dishewasher to keep them healthy too, although I think it probably doesn't matter so much with the dogs.

  12. Informative post, thanks. I just bought a new dishwasher and was actually unsure if I liked it. I am beginning to get used to loading it now, so maybe that was the problem. I love that it has a sanitize selection available. I have been using that feature since I've been sick. I have never put my sponges in, but that is a good idea.

I also love to wash dishes. I'm surprised at how many comments reflect that same quirk. I love to put my hands in hot soapy water. I find washing the pots and pans very satisfying and calming. I guess this trait dates me. We grew up without dishwashers, or I should say, my mother used my sister and me as the dishwashers. I always wanted to wash, and my sister always wanted to dry and put away. Some of my favorite memories are of the two of us washing dishes together.

  13. Is this message supposed to be subtle and indirect? If so I think you missed. I enjoyed reading it.

  14. I love my dishwasher! Like you I run it about every other day. I do need to run the sponges through more often. Tom washes up after dinner. It it involves hot soapy water to wash the kitchen things down, but it eats my hands up. I do not like doing dishes.

  15. Yes, Yes, yes. You have to keep things rinsed to hold food poisoning and bay. I have no time to get sick. I clean my filters, clean the interior with a vinegar rinse, and rinse my dishes before we wash. They say I don't have to do that last one, but our water pressure is low and doesn't always get rid of food bits. I want clean, safe dishes.

  18. I do most of what we use in the dishwasher once a week and use soap and hot water daily. I bleach my microfiber dish sponges and towels every few days...we probably adjust to what germs are in our own homes, but it can't hurt...

  19. And wash your hands frequently.
