For the past week or more my days and nights have been consumed again with scanning our family photos. It's a tedious, rather tiring job, but it needs to be done. I've got most of the everyday at-home type family photos done. I'm now working on travel photos and gosh do we have a lot! Luckily, I have them pretty organized and labeled in albums so it's a do-able task.
I just finished England.
In 1990, Art came home from work in Chicago and said, "How do you feel about going to England?"
"Ummm... Sure," I said laughing. I figured he was joking. We'd never traveled overseas as a family before. I'd only had one previous overseas college trip to Japan in 1970.
A couple of days later, he came home and said he'd bought the tickets. He said the prices were so amazingly reasonable that he couldn't pass it up. I think it was something like $350. for a round trip ticket to Heathrow. I couldn't believe this was happening. It absolutely floored me.
On March 31st, we were on our way. I remember sitting at O'Hare Airport still in shock about what we were doing.
A call came out that they had overbooked and if anybody would like to give up their seats, they would be giving vouchers for the cost of our tickets.
We went right up and volunteered to go on another flight.
However, they didn't need us so they called us up again. They said that because our seats had been given away, they would be putting us in Business Class. Art told them we were booked for Coach and asked if the Business Class would be as good.
The agent laughed and said, "Trust me, sir. You'll love it."
We did.
Everything went well except that the kids' suitcases did not arrive with us. We couldn't wait a day for them because we needed to be on our way to Oxfordshire and Blenheim Palace where Winston Churchill was born.
After very little sleep, Art had to get into our rental car and drive on the other side of the street and learn about Round-Abouts.
At Blenheim Palace we got to try clotted cream on scones for afternoon tea. It was quite lovely!
The following day, we were in Bath. After reading all of Jane Austen's novels, it was such a thrill to actually be in Bath!
Then we were on our way to Bath. We passed by this burning car which really freaked us out. We could hear the emergency vehicles coming. It exploded just as we went by and we could feel the heat.
Caerphilly Castle in Wales was awesome. I wondered how they ever kept warm in those stone rooms.
We enjoyed Wales and saw a lot there.
The kids were having to wear our clothes and I have a feeling they weren't exactly thrilled.
Art felt great to drive into London and return the car. I'll bet his blood pressure was high from all that stressful driving.
Paddington Station was fun for the kids.
In London, we got to see Starlight Express and Cats. We were right up front for Starlight Express so having the stars roller skate within touching distance really kept you alert.
However, Jon fell asleep before the second act of Cats. I had to wake him up so he could hear Memories.
I was so excited to see a real life Bobby that I asked one of them if I could have them take a photo with Jon. The officer was very kind, but poor Jon was mortified.
And then there was Big Ben. It was big.
The kids' suitcases were delivered to us in London so they could be dressed in their teen-type gear for the last three days of the trip.
While we were outside Westminster Abbey a procession of cars arrived. Someone in the crowd told us it was Queen Elizabeth. I sure wish I had my long lens digital camera then. The photo is blurry, but the queen stood out in red. Prince Philip was with her too. He stood about looking at the crowds before following her in.
We went to the Tower of London, Harrods, Buckingham Palace, the British Museum and a myriad other must-see places. I have a feeling what the kids remembered most about the trip was the FULL English Breakfast.
For a first trip abroad, it was wonderful to be in an English speaking country, and hearing the different accents was fun. We would love to go back again someday.
Ahhh... Memories...
OK... Back to my scanning. Rome is next.

Isn't it wonderful to have great memories and photographs as well!! I love yours. You have indeed had a great life! I've had reason to look back over my life recently and enjoy old photos! Enjoy!

hmmm. Is something wrong with Blogger? It is 7:55 pm on Tuesday Hawaiian time right now.
ReplyDeleteI spent 2 weeks in London in November 1969 coming from Thailand where I'd lived and worked for 10 months prior. Bought my 1st winter coat and gloves there. You are right: Memories!
Gigi: Sorry about that. No, nothing is wrong with Blogger. It's me. I'm rushing between my scanning and goofed. I published instead of scheduling the post for tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a good time in my home country :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful trip. Whew! I first thought the burning car was your rental.
ReplyDeleteFound out that Sam's Club has scanners for stacking all sizes of old family pics, and puts it on DVD or makes prints for really cheap. They just printed 544 Italy pics for my son at 13 cents each in one hour!

Well Kay, it was wonderful going back to England with you, ahhhh, memories :)
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures and great memories, Kay. I love the one of the kids at Paddington Station, one of my favorite London landmarks.
ReplyDeleteI am looking into getting a scanner that will convert old negatives and slides into digital. I've got a regular scanner and I know what you mean about it being time consuming. I've got drawers and drawers full of pictures but only scan them when I need one.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like it was a great trip! I look forward to hearing about Rome.
Kay,
ReplyDeleteYour tale made me tired, all over again. We have been to England many times and worn ourselves ragged because there is so much to see.
We have boxes and boxes of slides plus several photo albums full of pictures. Don't know if I will ever take the time to scan most of them. I stopped taking photos of my trips to England sometime in the 1990s because David grew weary of carrying my big heavy camera and tripod. I couldn't carry my own equipment so my last few trips I took no photos.
Having children along with you on a trip always makes it much more enjoyable. They see so many things we miss. My granddaughter Amelia thought mastering the subway in New York City was the best thing she did, although we took them to see Spiderman on the big screen. David and I saw CATS on another trip.
Sounds like you saw many hightlihts in your whirlwind tour. BTW did you know Big Ben is an office building? The burning car would have scared me half to death. Driving on the narrow roads almost did.
Thanks for the memories. Dianne
what a wonderful trip, I enjoy your travels so much and can't wait to see more. You have beautiful children,
ReplyDeletehow fun to relive the past...and you took your kids too-what an education for them to see history come alive!
ReplyDeleteI started back to my scanning yesterday, and the keyboard on that computer died. Then, I reached this giant batch of train pictures and was saved when G said he didn't think they were worth scanning. I am going through them and pick out the shots with G and I. I want those even if he doesn't.
ReplyDeleteI'm only on my third box. LOL
England is in my bucket list. How lovely you got to go and to see so much--even the queen--what a treat.
ReplyDeletewhat wonderful memories, would love to go there sometime!
ReplyDeletethere is just nothing like memories of great trips/vacations!
ReplyDeleteI have been to London twice...both times with my daughter and we just love the city. I think I could go there now and get on the subway and go anywhere I wanted. It's really easy to get around (with a map)ha
can't wait to hear about Rome!!
without all the security procedures for air travel back then, musta been .... suffices as a memory in it self. Great pics.
ReplyDeleteI love the dishwasher story!!!
ReplyDeleteAmazed you caught the car on fire.
I was driving into a gas station when I spotted one. Hubby made me drive away fast! (Probably a good idea!) I don't ALWAYS listen to him!
Keep up the great posts!
Thanks for visiting!
My first trip to England was about ten years later than yours, and without kids. It must have been wonderful to share this experience with your teens!
ReplyDeleteWe spent a week in London and nearby during our spring break. And then we returned about four years later for three weeks of castles, cathedrals and gardens. I would love to go back again.
This makes me want to get out my photo albums. After that trip we had a digital camera. No more scanning.
I enjoyed this Kay..I was in England with my parents when I was 11..scary huh? I think that someone with good working hands could hire themselves out as a scanner because I dread having to do it....but I should...
ReplyDeleteand so we witness the birth of Kay & Art experienced travelers!
ReplyDeleteand your kids were/are gorgeous
