Our friend, Ed gave us tickets to go to the Kunia Orchid Show which was held at Leilehua High School in Wahiawa. Last year, our son Jon and Sarah were here so we went together.

It rained last year. It was raining again this year when we went to pick up my brother, Dennis.

The flower show was set up in the high school gymnasium.

Orchids were also for sale. Although mom loves orchids, she didn't feel she could give them the expert care they needed.

This green anthurium was called Midori which is green in Japanese.
There was also a bonsai exhibit and demonstration.

This purple orchid was Dennis' favorite. I can't remember which was mom's favorite. She was like a child in a candy store, pulling us along and telling us to take a photo of every orchid that caught her eye.

I'm not so sure if I agreed with the best in the show. It was really hard to capture the subtle pink coloring.

After spending a couple of hours there, we went back into the rain to have lunch at the Ginger House (Chinese restaurant) in Mililani.
All in all, it was a wonderful Sunday!

ReplyDeleteI agree with DJan. Simply splendid. I inherited 2 tables full of orchids and managed to kill all of them. I just don't have a green thumb.
ReplyDeleteMom is pretty good with her orchids when the birds aren't eating her buds or snipping them for fun, but they are tricky to raise. I had one plant in Chicago for about 7 years and I kept it alive, but it never bloomed again.

ReplyDeleteGreat job capturing the amazing variations in the orchid family. I too am a fan and think someday I will try to grow them. I was totally charmed by the tiny one on the small slab of wood.

ReplyDeleteSo Midori means green? My best friend in Chicago school, 3-12 grade, her middle name was Midori.
I think there's even a green melon liqueur called Midori for its color. Never tried it though.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to get out of the rain, and still be in the garden! Too many to choose the best, but the "dalmation" purple ones were pretty. Good to see Mom still toodling around the pretty flowers. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteIt was really hard for me to pick a favorite. I think Art liked that green spotty one. I think I liked the white lacy type.

ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful pictures Kay. I love orchids and used to have a few myself at on point when I had more time to grow them and look after them. I love the purple ones and have never seen them that colour here. May have to go to your island to see them. You all look happy and healthy which is lovely to see. Great pictures always.
