Another Sort of Bright Idea

I got the following e-mail with a link to a Target ad from my daughter, Tiffany.

"Did you see the above vest in your Target ad?  It’s eligible for in store pick up.  I think you just order it online and request in store pick up."

It was a regularly priced $39 weighted 10 lb. vest on sale for $32 at Target.  I was hesitant to order it with all the credit card problems they're having so Tif offered to order it for me since she shops there all the time anyway.  I expected it to take a week to get to Hawaii, but within a couple of hours we got an e-mail that it was ready for pick-up.  When we picked it up we saw the reason why.

It was opened.  Someone else must have bought it, not liked it and returned it.

I tried it and soon discovered why.  My shoulders started to hurt.  We put towels under the shoulder straps to try to soften the pressure.  It wasn't enough.  Art tried walking with it and had the same reaction.

I need to have more weight bearing exercise for my osteoporosis so I was determined to make this work.  The shocking thing for me was how heavy 10 pounds is.  It's really heavy to wear.  If you lose 10 pounds while dieting, that's a LOT.  If you have 10 pounds of extra weight, I can see how it can impact your knees although your bones would be getting a good work out.

I decided to try making a pad for my our shoulders. I sewed a prototype first.  Then I used a heavier material in a more masculine color so that Art wouldn't object to using it.

Since Art is looking for ways to add to his exercising routine he'll be able to use this vest also.  That's why I told him I was buying the vest for both of us.

I also told him the lovely purple color is quite macho too.

He's a little dubious.
Seeeeee...

If Hulk can wear purple, why not Art?

  1. You might want to work up to ten pounds of weight. Try putting a few cans of vegetables in a backpack and carrying that around.

  2. I hope the shoulder pads you made will enable you both to make use of the vest. I have no idea that weight bearing exercise can help with preventing osteoporosis. Thank you for making me aware of this.

  3. He wears the purple well! Like you said, it's manly enough for The Hulk!!

  4. Uh, hmm, seems regular exercise could tone up muscles, which helps bone, without hurting the shoulders. My urge is to have you ask Art's doc first, then your NP, Kay, about this weighted vest. Since I'm trying to lose weight, I'm not so in tune with slender people's "problems." I'll send you a mental vest for each 10 pounds I lose. You've got 3 vests from me, so far. Be careful, though. 1. We'll ask Kathy next time. Today was Ar's angiogram. We're pretty exhausted.

  5. LOL He will appreciate it once he gets using it.
Notes: I put the note functions back to no threaded comments. George was unable to leave me any sort of note with the threaded note function on. Darn it. Thanks so much for sharing the tips.

  6. purple is more macho than pink

  7. After looking at walking vests for men and for women, I can see why Art might be a little dubious. It's not the color that is the problem, it is the design. The men's are a bit different and the other boys might make fun of him at recess.

    1. Too funny! He'd only wear it in the house or when we go on our walk in the evening.

  8. too funny, I'm trying to drop the weight now...only a pound/week but it's helping-not interested in adding it back. Though I do use hand weights for my exercise class...

  9. I was just reading about these weight vests this morning. I think I'll pass - I've got enough weight of my own already . . .

  10. Neat... Looks alot like my camera vest I wear for all of my equipment when we hike.... Hope it works for you.... Very NICE.

Foggy morning here on the Cumberland Plateau. Have a wonderful day.

  11. Purple is not a girly color. Kansas State University, in north-central Kansas, is where the veterinary medicine school is located. The town bleeds purple: purple stadium seats, purple bleachers, everyone wears solid purple t-shirts, purple mailboxes, even all-purple trash cans at the curb! The tough football guys are in purple jerseys. Have fun! DrumMajor

  13. For strength training, I personally favor a gym where there are multiple pieces of strength building equipment and professional trainers to show how to use each. A circuit through those machines will produce good results after a few months of daily or even three days a week, attendance. The Y is a good place because they have specialized help for seniors, and people with various physical needs.

    1. I'm sure it's very true that a personal trainer is the best and safest way to go.

  14. It looks more like a form of torture. I've been told that simply walking more and standing more will be enough to help with the osteoporosis. How about a few extra turns up and down the stairs, that should surely be easier than wearing an uncomfortable weighted vest, and just as effective I'm sure.

  15. Laughed out loud at Art's facial expression. Doesn't look as though he's overly thrilled with the vest (or is it the pads? or is it the color?).

    1. We haven't been using it a lot because we tend to forget it's there. I'm so forgetful.

  16. You are so funny! But, yes, Art looks fine in purple. I have osteopenia--some loss of bone density. I really think that the yoga is helping because I feel so much more balanced. I have gotten back on my bike--going a little slower and staying a little closer to home still, but I do love the exercise I get from riding.

  19. I just started with a physical trainer today, and barely made it to baby level. When I can carry around an extra ten pounds, I'll challenge you! Not Art, though. :-)

    1. Got back from Tripler a little over an hour ago. We're all pretty tired and resting now. Art is doing fine. If I have time, I'll try to work on a post.

  21. I like the way you are so adapting. I would never be able to walk with 10 lbs of extra weight on my shoulders like this. My neck and shoulders would totally start acting up and telling to stop. I hope it works for you two.

  22. Oh Kay, some of us just don't need to ADD weight! Hope it works for you.
