I've seen warnings about feeding chocolates to dogs because it's actually poisonous to them.
Art remembers when his family had received a box of chocolate macadamia nut candies.
They gave his beloved dog, Finnegan one of the candy pieces.
The next morning they found a small pile of vomit at the door. Finnegan must have tried to leave the house since he was feeling sick that night. In the pile they found the three intact macadamia nuts.
They'd always assumed that it was the nuts that made him sick.
Now we know it was the chocolate.
I wonder what else dogs aren't allowed to eat.

What a beautiful dog Finnegan was! Our beloved Swiss Mountain Dog Jasper was part of our lives for nearly 14 years. He died in 2012 and we still miss him dearly. I always knew that dogs aren't allowed to eat chocolate. Raisins are dangerous for them as well. Our neighbour told me years ago that her dog ate chocolates wrapped in foil at night. She had put them under the Christmas tree along with all the other presents. Sadly, the dog died because of this.

ReplyDeleteOur neighbour has a dog and i have seen them to feed their dog with ice creams, apples, grapes etc..Now i think i should tell them that they should not do so..thanks for sharing such an important information..
ReplyDeleteI have always heard that chocolate was bad for dogs, though once my daughter's dog ate a whole bag with no ill effects. I recently heard that onions are also bad for dogs.

ReplyDeleteSmall amounts of ice cream are OK, but NEVER if they include chocolate. Nestles makes an ice cream product especially for dogs if you are really picky.

Our old dog jumped up on the breakfast bar and ate a whole box of Godiva chocolates someone had given me as a gift. I was scared but fortunately there were no after effects. However, I would never ever intentionally feed animals chocolate, just because I have read how toxic it is.
ReplyDeleteLots of different house plants; and sugar-free gum or diet candy, because the sorbitol makes pets VERY ill. Don't let pets get into your purse with sugar-free stuff, because it isn't good for them.
ReplyDeleteBack in the '70s, commercial dog treats actually had chocolate, but no sweetner, but I bet they're off the market. I'm thinking the grapes are to be avoided because if the dog doesn't chew it first, it would be a choking hazard. My dog liked my margarita but not beer....

ReplyDeleteChocolate is actually worse for cats but they are less likely to eat it than a dog.
I had always heard that as well, but my friend had a dog that ate half a box of chocolates and seemed none the worse for wear. Maybe it is how much cacao is in them?
ReplyDeleteI have also heard that blue berries are poison to dogs. We had a Heinz 57 dog that ate everything. Once an entire chocolate birthday cake. He also grabbed a 2lb bag of peanut M&Ms and devoured the whole thing. Then there was the time he ate a full bottle of 250 Ibuprofen tablets. I am afraid I stood there looking at the cracked open, empty bottle and looked at him and simply said, "Die Mickey, die!". Sadly, he did not. He lived to the ripe old age of 13 and finally started eating a normal diet of dog food.
ReplyDeleteI new that about chocolate (unlike for us, dark chocolate is the worst for dogs), raisins, and grapes and just recently heard that sugar free gum is really bad.
ReplyDeleteHi Kay, Believe it or not, macadamia nuts are also not good for dogs, causing hind leg weakness, tremors, low grade fever and possibly pain. So you can eat your chocolate covered macadamia nuts and not feel guilty about not sharing with your dogs! Holly
