There was this little color change in the windows which showed leakage between the windows.
Luckily it was warranted so we called the company and they came to place the glass.
Art got to talking to the fellow and told him how disappointed we were at how the screens were deteriorating where the steel and aluminum came in contact with each other. We realized that most window companies don't guarantee the screens in Hawaii.
The repair fellow said they were now making the screen leaf springs out of stainless steel and that he would send us some new ones.

We were really excited when they arrived.
Certainteed sold their business to Plygem and we're really grateful that Plygem is honoring all the warranties and even going beyond to keep their customers happy.

This experience has really taught us what we need to look for when we buy anything in Hawaii.
We've learned that when two different kinds of metal come together, they react with each other and corrode faster because of our salt air.
We didn't have this problem on the mainland.
I'm keeping our fingers crossed that our other windows will survive for a few more years. I'm afraid those replacements won't be free like these were.
But that's OK. At least we know we can get them. I guess that's why windows were made with wood in the old days.
But then... there's termites.

I never knew of the corrosion caused by salt air until I read your blog, what a surprise to have a company so obliging!!!

ReplyDeleteWouldn't pretreated wood work to keep away termites? It works on decks and out buildings, etc. so why not windows. How wonderful that you were taken care of by the window company.

ReplyDeleteCertainTeed has been a great company in the Midwest. (Ex-husband used to install them.) Any repairs were done locally, so they could be done properly and quickly. They should replace anything that isn't looking/working correctly. Interesting how Hawaii's salty humidity tests even the toughest products.

I never once saw screen windows in England but we MUST have them in Georgia!! (Well, if you don't, you can't open your windows!!)
ReplyDeleteAnd they didn't have any termites in England either...that is, they didn't...they got some in Cornwall, I think, but the last I heard, they hope they don't spread any further!
Glad your company honored the other company, that's a nice thing.
I didn't know CertainTeed had been sold. We have a CertainTeed manufacturing plant just up the highway from us. We notice it when we head to the bay area, and it hasn't been running as much lately. Makes me wonder, now that you tell us they have been sold.
ReplyDeleteAs for the problem with corrosion, anyone living along the coast can tell you similar stories. We stay at the same place in Cayucos each year, and she fills us in on the latest redo just because of ocean air and the salt.
Salt water can corrode just about anything. And I've heard of copper and aluminum reacting badly with one another, so am not surprised other metals do the same.

You are really fortunate to have a company that honors its previous owners' obligations. That says volumes to me about their trustworthiness. And you got new screens, better ones it seems. :-)

When I lived near the ocean in Devon as a young girl, the damp sea air caused quite a few problems, but fortunately and like Art, my Dad was able to fix pretty much everything. BTW, we have been watching a real estate show on the Home Garden channel, people buying homes in Hawaii. What fun!
