We had a very laid back Christmas this year. This holiday season has been rather difficult for our family so we didn't have a tree and we really didn't get into the holiday spirit too much.
We weren't going to get together for Christmas, but Art said we should... just to perk ourselves up.
When I called my brother, Dennis, he said that he and Nancy always have Kentucky Fried Chicken on Christmas Eve. I had to laugh because I'd heard that it's become a custom in Japan to have Kentucky Fried Chicken at Christmas. It was some kind of marketing strategy that worked like a charm.
For Dennis and Nancy though, it was just something easy they started since they were so busy with their jobs that they didn't have time to cook an elaborate meal on Christmas Eve.
Nancy brought over the Kentucky Fried Chicken meal and Mom added her macaroni salad as Dennis requested. I added a green salad just to make it a little healthier.
And you know what? This was a no stress, simple, loving and really fun party. It was just right.
I think we might have to make this an annual tradition.... just like the Japanese.

It's a great idea! We had a no stress dinner, also, and it was lovely. So nice to see a picture of your mom, she's been on my mind lately. :-)

ReplyDeleteIndeed! I wish I could convince my spouse for more no stress holidays with our son and the Grands far away in Arizona. But so far no luck as she seems to thrive on elaborate preparations for single friends and neighbors over the holidays...
ReplyDeleteThis looks like the very best kind of holiday meal--no muss, no fuss. I have recently been hearing about the Japanese and their affinity for KFC for Christmas. Kind of like our Starbucks gift cards here!
ReplyDeleteWe were home for Christmas this year, the first time in about 5 years, so I did get a small tree, but we made very minimal fuss about the day, just staying home and having a vegetarian dinner. And now, the day after Christmas, I've taken down all the decorations and will take them back to the storage unit this afternoon.

At my house that would not have gone over well though. Busy or not we need home cooked food.

ReplyDeleteAnyways...not everyone has KFC for Xmas in Japan, but chicken is the normal Xmas dinner.

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have ever imagined that the Japanese would choose KFC for holiday feasting compared to more healthy options. If there's a Boston Market around, they do have tasty comfort food. I like to grab food from there if I don't want to prepare a lot of things ahead of time. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteWe had Boston Market a block from our house in Chicago and used to love it. I wish we had them here in Hawaii. We could get away with a simple Christmas meal, but I'm afraid our New Year is quite a bit more work. Mom is already planning some things that MUST be at the table.
