How to Take a Photo With an iPhone

I don't know if it's the same with all smartphones, but I learned something about my iPhone 4s when we were in Illinois last fall. 

I thought my iPhone 4s was just OK for photos.  I couldn't really rely on it all the time to take adequate photos.  I'd been nagging Art that I wanted an iPhone 6 to take better photos.

In Illinois, I saw that my son-in-law had gotten Tiffany the larger iPhone 6 on the left for her birthday.  He has the iPhone 5c or s in the middle.  My iPhone 4s is on the right.

Anyway, I learned from Tif that I could tap on the camera screen to focus where I want. 

What?  How long have I had this iPhone and I didn't know that?  Nobody told me.



The iPhone takes the best photos in bright light.

Still, I needed a photo for this post to illustrate how to focus so I had Art take this photo in the dim light in our hallway for me anyway.

He used my new Canon camera.


And here's the shot of the poinsettia taken with the iPhone.  Not bad for dim lighting.  I've been taking photos in sunlight and they've been really nice.

Uh oh.... What am I doing posting about this?

Now Art will take even longer to agree to upgrade to the iPhone 6.

    I just learned from my granddaughter to tap for focus on my GS5 phone as well.

    I usually like my iPod Touch (Gen 5) photos as long as there is a good amount of light in the room. But it was above and beyond better than the generation 4 version of the iPod Touch

    I recently learned this about my iPhone 6. I didn't know it was available on the earlier models. Isn't it amazing how good our pictures are with our phones? Who would have believed this awhile back. But I do have to say that the pictures I take with my improved iPhone 6 are WAY better than the ones I took with the iPhone 4S. Just sayin' :-)

    I do take a few photos with my phone but I have a small Canon that works much better.

    Kay, I've found that many times I get just as good a quality photo with my IPhone 5 as my husband does with his Nikon with the expensive lens. Who have thought?

    I agree that iPhone pictures taken in dim light are pretty poor quality. However, since I usually don't carry my camera with me the phone has to do.

    I am so impressed with the excellent quality of photos on my iPhone. It is a 5S. I find that I am using it more than my little point and shoot.

    Hi Kay! Good tips. I think the iPhone takes very good photos in certain situations. Especially sunsets and sunrises!

    I no longer have a camera, just my phone, a 5s. I take it every where b/c I also use it like a computer. True, I miss typing on a regular keyboard, like I'm doing right now, but it's just so convenient in every other way. I upload almost all of my photos to Instagram now so it's just so much easier to take the photos with the phone.

    So you are shooting yourself in the foot. The smart phones are amazing. I don't have one. You have to be really into photography to take advantage of all that is on a camera.

    Smart phones are the same as IPhone. Smart phones are more popular in Europe.

    So far I am quite happy with my iPhone 5c. Updated, it now has editing features. I can crop, lighten or darken exposure, intensify color and a few other things. I use it to post instantly on Facebook. I did know about tapping to focus, but had sort of forgotten about that. Thanks for the reminder.

    My kids have Smartphones. We don't. My granddaughter told me, tap on the screen, for the iPad to bring up a feature. I felt so dumb! She's 4!
