Hawaii is a rather interconnected state. If you talk long enough with someone starting with "What high school did you graduate from? What year?" you would eventually find people you mutually are friends with or are related to.
What a surprise it was for me to learn that blogger Jalna of Photos By Jalna knew two of my cousins. Not only was that a surprise but those cousins are from two different sides of my family. How cool is this?
Anyway, Jalna posted a warning last week about something that happened to her sister in Ala Moana Shopping Center at one of the kiosks that offer to straighten your hair. Jalna's post was called Beware: The Flat Iron Con. It disturbed me enough that I asked Jalna if I could use her photo and post today.
Jalna did notify the management of Ala Moana Shopping Center, but never got a response.
That's a pity.
The shopping center should really be more careful about protecting people who may leave there with a bad impression of Hawaii.
For anyone who shops at Ala Moana, beware!

If consumers do not make a fuss, then no one knows. It is up to us to protect our rights.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the warning Kay. I have been approached by these kiosk people every time I go to the mall. I only stopped once. Once was enough, never again. The aggressive sales tactics always puts me off.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, I would want just the opposite curly hair as my hair is naturally straight but not for those prices...
ReplyDeleteThis is just horrendous. I would write a letter to the editor of the Star Advertiser. Then heads would roll.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking us to Jalna's blog. I intend to follow her now.
pretty scandalous Kay, thanks to you and Jalna for making us aware, it could be happening at other malls.
ReplyDeleteLike most locals, I lament the loss of what Ala Moana WAS: Hawaii's Center. The lack of response to a complaint sounds about right. . . . . .sad
ReplyDeleteALOHA from Honolulu where I can see the mall from my lanai-

I'm always a little leary of the kiosks in the malls anyway....why don't they have a real store to sell from? I won't be in Hawaii any time soon, but certainly appreciate your waring.
ReplyDeleteHow awful. I, too, am leery of kiosks.
ReplyDeleteI fear turning cynical as I age, but things like this just seem to make it inevitable. It is a good warning. And good for you both for speaking up.
ReplyDeleteScary. We always think these operations are vetted, but often they are not.
ReplyDeleteProud of her for being loud. How do these crooks sleep at night?
ReplyDeleteI went over and read her blog post, too. Good for you, Jalna, for speaking out and making a fuss! This is just wrong, wrong, wrong!
ReplyDeleteWe had a little kiosk at the mall once here that was some kind of photo company. They were the most aggressive people I've ever seen when it came to business. All the complaints must of the led them to leaving there not long after that.
ReplyDeleteGood for you and her for making a fuss and publishing about the offending company. We all need to speak up when wrong is done.
ReplyDeleteIt's a small world! Since our population is small we can many times meet someone and find somebody we both know.
ReplyDeleteWow that is just terrible. I hate it when those scammers accost you when you are shopping. They always want you to try something. This is a good warning. Thankfully, her hair was ruined or burned. My hair is fragile and burns easily. So many of these hot irons can really do some damage.
ReplyDeleteThe kiosk salesman was so unkind...it's beyond words. Awful!!!
ReplyDeleteL...w
Thanks for spreading the word!!
