Once a month after Tai Chi, we join two other couples for a long, wonderful, happy lunch. We take turns coming up with a different place to sample.
This time it was Kay and Calvin's turn. The other couple is Cal and Myra and we, of course are Kay and Art so there are two Kays and two Calvins. I'm not saying that's why we got together, but if we find another Myra or Art... who knows?
Kay and Calvin chose Pancakes and Waffles BLD at the Waimalu Plaza Shopping Center in Aiea. Everybody there was very friendly and helpful. You ordered your meal at the counter and it was brought to your table.
Art ordered a Portuguese pork dish called Vinha D'alhos which was very tasty. He said he really enjoyed it.
I ordered the chicken and waffles which the restaurant is somewhat known for, I believe. However, it really was just chicken on top of a waffle. The fried chicken was huge and crispy. The waffle was fine. I had to walk two miles uphill tonight to make up for the calories. (Art just corrected me saying it was 1 mile up and 1 mile down.)
Kay (the other one) ordered fried rice Loco Moco. Loco Moco is a Hawaiian favorite. It's different variations of rice topped with a hamburger patty, fried egg and gravy.
The food was not exactly healthy, but there was a large eating area so we didn't feel like we had to leave right away.
It was really wonderful just sitting together, sharing our lives, feeling the friendship... and that is very healthy!

Hungry...but oh my cholestrol! LOL
ReplyDeleteBut you don't even notice them when you're eating with friends.
Deletethis looks very yummy, like comfort food at it's finest!! those are large portions as well!! eating with friends is always lovely!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've been eating more hamburgers and fries lately and at my doctor's appt. yesterday, he said my cholestrol was improved...imagine that-lol!
ReplyDeleteI love chicken and waffles. Discovered this dish while living in San Francisco. We had one place in Fresno that served the most amazing fried chicken with a cinnamon laced waffle but they closed over a year ago so I've not gotten my 'fix' in a long time. Your chicken looks really good.
ReplyDeletei LOVE loco moco! i serve mine with macaroni salad too. my son's friend is just about to open the first hawaiian restaurant here and he will have this on his menu!
ReplyDeleteNo kidding??? That is just too cool! We had a Hawaiian restaurant in Chicago, but were disappointed with the saimin. I mentioned to them that the noodles looked more like linguine rather than saimin noodles but they said it was too expensive to ship the Hawaiian saimin noodles to Chicago. We just loved seeing a Hawaiian type restaurant though. I think it's still open. I think.
DeleteEating out is generally not the healthiest...since it is geared for taste and not nutrition. I'm trying to remind husband when he cooks...think about our health, not how the food tastes. Even "vegetarian healthy" can overdo the salt.
ReplyDeleteL...w
Art is always telling mom to REDUCE the salt and we can add our own if needed. She has a hard time with that.
DeleteAh, I definitely have to go eat breakfast now!!! You've got my appetite making growling noises!!!
ReplyDeleteI think I would love Loco Moto!
ReplyDeleteGetting together is nice, Kay

I've never heard of loco moco or chicken on a waffle. I bet you had some leftovers for later!
ReplyDeleteActually, Art just finished off what I couldn't eat.
DeleteLooks completely different than in my place
ReplyDeleteinteresting food, and a wonderful get together!
ReplyDeleteThose lunches are not so appealing to me...where are the vegetables? But time with friends is a healthy thing and I am sure you and Art both were good about working off the calories!
ReplyDeleteit's been awhile since I've been to a restaurant for waffles or pancakes
ReplyDeleteIt looks so good and how odd that you mention pancakes today. I've just started making sourdough bread from my own starter and it is GOOD ... I think so because I love that sour taste. I got some organic strawberries yesterday and decided to use the bread starter for pancakes with strawberries. I had to look on YT for the recipe but it turned out great.
ReplyDeleteI laughed at you having to walk off you marvelous brunch.
I'm curious. Do you put syrup on your waffles? Because I usually put syrup on my waffles. And syrup totally doesn't go with fried chicken . . . to me. So it seems like a strange combination.
ReplyDeleteI did use syrup for the waffles but didn't put it on the chicken. The chicken was decadent enough already.
DeleteThere's some kind of quote about friendship and food??? Or did I just make that up? Anyway having a routine to go out for lunch is a good tradition to follow
ReplyDeleteI love visits with friends like this. I miss the group we ate out with called the "Feasters."
ReplyDeleteI have heard of chicken and waffles restaurants, but I have never understood that combination. I like both but not together.
ReplyDeletebut your companions look like they are having a great time.
What fun! I like the look of all the dishes but the Loco Moco would suit my taste buds right now. I must be hungry but have to get a good night's sleep before breakfast.
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny. Tell Art it felt like two miles up hill.
ReplyDeleteYou amaze me, Kay, staying as healthy as you do and eating fried food as in those pictures. Oh myyyy! I think I gained a pound just looking at them. :-)
ReplyDeleteLovely food and with friends is the icing on the cake..
ReplyDeleteMy stomach clenched at that chicken. I love it but usually refrain. Possibly because I don't put in the 2 miles after eating. Hey, you have to enjoy every not and then.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right. You have to balance a life with exercise and food!
ReplyDeleteNext time you plan to go to the Pan Cakes and Waffle during a weekend, let me know because we will try to join you as we live right up the hill. Ron, VCT Group
ReplyDeleteWe sure will, Ron!
