We had the hardest time coming up with a name for our first born. We finally decided on Tiffany or Adam. We always liked the idea of Adam for a first child, but my mom was not for it. She might be Buddhist, but she didn't want her first grandson to be named after a poor guy who got persuaded to eat an apple by the first woman and was thrown out of the garden of Eden. We still liked Adam so if our daughter was a boy, he would have been Adam.
For a girl's name, we dithered back and forth. However, at the time Art was really interested in Tiffany glass. He had a Tiffany lamp kit that he had bought but never did complete.
We thought we were being original. We didn't know anybody else who named their child Tiffany. We liked the idea of our daughter being named for beautiful colored glass that would always brighten our lives.
And she did. Tiffany has been the light of our lives.
However, would you believe that a doll was then on the market called Tiffany Taylor? She had half blond and half brunette hair. I can still hear the commercial, "Tiffany Taylor, she's what you want her to be."
Sigh...
In later years Tiffany was often called Tif.
I insisted on spelling her name with one f because as you know the meaning of tiff is to argue, squabble, bicker, fight.
Now, many years later one of her best friends who is also named Tiffany moved in next door and she spells her name Tiff.
The funny thing is that when Tiffany went to high school she found a LOT of friends who were also named Tiffany or Tyfani or Tiffani or Tifani or whatever.
And the colored glass thing? Tif liked the idea of Tiffany jewelry even more... than glass.
You just never know.

I was named after Glenda Farrell, the movie star.

Lisa was named after the movie, David and Lisa.

ReplyDeleteIt is funny how certain names can be so common in one generation and all but forgotten by the next.
I was so convinced that my first child was a girl that I had only picked out a girl's name. The nurses threatened to keep me in the hospital til I named my son. I picked a name just because I I did not know anyone with that name at the time, Kevin.
Apparently I was named Christine after a popular radio show at the time, circa 1959!
ReplyDeletehad four sons-first one named after his dad-Frank, Lisa if a boy #2 Daniel after a friend,or Julia after Beatle song if girl #3 Brook-or the alternate was running water-we were into nature names-April Spring if a girl.#4 Jeffrey after my boss at work or Anna Christina if a girl. Never got a dg...lol!
ReplyDeleteMy first born was to be Heidi, and she is now Heidi...after the story book that I always loved. She gets called "Heid" all the time. It is still pretty original, however, not a lot of her friends have that name.
ReplyDeleteI was named for non-religious reasons. My parents ran out of names, so my brother suggested Adam after a friend he knew in middle school.
ReplyDeleteI like my name but I hate that it originated in a creation myth that obviously wasn't real but at least many millions of people still believe it literally happened. And I get the "where's Eve?" jokes.

ReplyDeleteNames. I'm Margaret Millicent. There were a great number of Margaret Millicent's in my family, and my grandfather's sister was one. After her death at 13, friends of the family were named after her. My mother was named MM, I am MM, my eldest daughter is MM, and one of her daughters is MM while another is Megan. It was bad while my mother was alive, because in her 80's, she changed her nickname to mine. Ah, names....and no one uses Millicent.
We had to come up with names that did not evoke bad memories of former students. We never had anyone named Jill and I liked the name.

ReplyDeleteMy mother loved the name Patricia and kept wading through male children till she finally got a girl to tag with it. She almost gave up and was going to call my brother Patrick. Kind of glad she tried one more time.
Who's the young guy holding the baby? How young we all looked in those days. In our family the first son received the paternal grandfather's name. The second son received the paternal grandfather's name. This was an old German custom.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is named Anna Cristina. With those two names we were able to honor two aunts, a great grandma, and two great grandmothers. It made a lot of people happy!
ReplyDeleteOur brother-in-law's daughters are named Anna, and Cristina. Their mother was thrilled one day when an affluent woman plopped down her expensive purse - Anna Christina pasted all over it.
DeleteOf our 4 kids, the first one was the easiest since "Takezo" after Miyamoto Musashi was chosen already, even before conception. His English name was Michael because it just seemed to be perfect. He is the crown prince of the family.
The other 3 that followed were girls, lots of people had input and we even chose one of their names based on spin the bottle - whoever the bottle pointed to got their name of choice for the soon-to-be baby.
Names are very important - somehow they grow into them. Tiffany is a beautiful name, congrats!
It is Jewish tradition to use the first letter of a beloved departed's name for a child. But NOT to use the full name, or the child's father's name ( Junior, or the II, III, etc.)

The story I heard is that my mother liked the actor Dana Andrews. But it often made trouble for me. Like people pronouncing it as Donna instead of with a long a. Or like getting mail addressed to MR. Dana ... instead of Miss.
Art looks so YOUNG! I named my boys Christopher Eric (after the explorers) and Stephen Norman (the middle name is my dad's and I just liked the sound of Stephen). I am so glad you are a blogger, Kay, because I learn so much from you every day. And your family is almost like my own! :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat photo and Tiffany is a pretty name. I am not sure why I was called Denise. My Mom wanted Julia but Dad wanted Denise, which got changed to Neesy as a nickname. That is still my family name. Gregg calls me Neesy and also my niece and brother-in-law in Germany and no one else.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is Michelle and her two best friends in high school were also Michelle. Plus there were a whole slew of Michelle's everywhere we turned. My Michelle was named for her Aunt and we had no idea it would be such a popular name for children born that year. She should have gone by her first name Elenore, for her other Aunt, and she would have truly been unique.
