I'm rather amazed. My daughter, Tiffany called to say that our neighbor who happens to be a university professor had taken my 8 year old granddaughter, KC to an afternoon of opera. Tif had asked KC if she wanted to hear some music with Auntie Caroline and KC said yes.
"Grandma, Grandma!" exclaimed KC on the cellphone. "I liked it! It was fun. My chair squeaked though so I didn't want to move in my seat. It was 2 hours long. Auntie Caroline said I was the only kid there."
I can just imagine! How many kids could sit for two hours listening to opera in a foreign language and not move?
Caroline has watched our kids grow up from the time they were in kindergarten. She's also been a surrogate aunt to KC since she was born.
I'm just so pleased that the two of them could have this special time together.
I'm just blown away that KC sat for so long listening to opera and enjoyed it. Wow!

ReplyDeleteI am so pleased that KC had this opportunity. It is sad that so many US kids do not go to symphonies, opera and such. Yesterday I was reading a program that the Opera of Paris has for the young. They have special programs for children and young people; the Paris Opera has about 60 shows for youth. Some are specially designated for teachers to educate the kids. But in the US there is little interest in teaching kids to appreciate good music and it is a subject usually cut out of the school budget. To give you an example the city of Washington, DC gives 41 opera performances per year and no special one for youth versus the Paris Opera that gives approximate 437 performances per year and 60 for youth, so you can understand why not many US kids go to such venues. Art education is pretty low here so I am so happy your grand daughter had a chance to go. Studies show that if you appreciate art when very young you will keep it all your life.

ReplyDeleteWe took my 7-year-old granddaughter to an outdoor concert of 'old peoples' music and I was so impressed by her behavior that we may do it again this summer!

ReplyDeleteThat is really a special little girl. I shake down to my bones at the thought of my 8 year old grandson being in a squeaky chair and asked to watch or listen to anything for two hours. It would not be pleasant for anyone. I met a young opera singer in Florida this past winter. It is an amazing talent to have and to enjoy.

ReplyDeleteSo great to have a neighbor like that! Our friend took one of our daughters - she was 10 years old at the time to the opera. It was Aida. She got all dressed up. He said that she was on the edge of her seat with her mouth open the whole time. It was the one and only time for her. In fact, she is the only one in the family (thus far) who ever went to the opera.

KC is amazing. I have a great love of opera and know that some adults have a hard time keeping still.
