Someone sent me a news video about the dangers of using wire brushes to clean your outdoor grills. I looked it up and sure enough, it can be dangerous.

I guess this is just one more thing to think about before the summer barbecue season starts up again."Foreign object ingestion is a common reason for visiting an emergency department (ED), particularly for children. In recent years, internal injuries have been reported following unintentional ingestions of wire grill-cleaning brush bristles by both children and adults. A series of six cases from a single hospital system with two EDs during July 2009–November 2010 was reported previously. This report describes a series of six more cases identified at the same hospital system during March 2011–June 2012. The six patients ranged in age from 31 to 64 years; five were men. Like the patients in the previous series, all six reported outdoor residential food grilling and use of commercially available wire grill-cleaning brushes. The severity of injury ranged from puncture of the soft tissues of the neck, causing severe pain on swallowing, to perforation of the gastrointestinal tract requiring emergent surgery. Awareness of this potential injury among health-care professionals is critical to facilitate timely diagnosis and treatment."
This is a great public service announcement. I don't grill, but I know people who do, and this is important information, for sure. BTW, I simply LOVE your new header. It looks like a fancy painting! I see you are having fun with Photoshop, right? :-)

ReplyDeletewow, funny you should mention that, Garry washed the grill off ours yesterday and the sink had little bits from the wire brush left after he drained the sink, he said the very same thing,, we will now brush and then wash the grill, very good advice!!

ReplyDeleteNever thought about it but you are right. I use those homemade scrubbers that work great if done while it is still a little warm.
ReplyDeleteGood thing we hardly cleaned our grills! We use the hibachi type grill that use briquets and sometimes we add wood and newspaper to get and keep the heat going. After we are done cooking, we cover the grill with the cover and everything left is burnt to a crisp and easy to scrape off for the next time.
ReplyDeleteHere is a very simple grilled shrimp recipe. It is also on my website and I pass out magnetic business cards with the recipe on it, just because it is SO easy and onolicious!
10 lbs of cleaned, shelled jumbo shrimp (this is for a HUGE batch, so adjust to smaller quantity)
1 30 oz bottle of mayonnaise
1 17 oz bottle oyster sauce
LOTS - really lots, like heads and heads of chopped garlic (fresh is best, but the prechopped is OK)
1/4 cup whiskey
1/4 cup vodka
dash of cayenne pepper
Marinate for at least 2 hours or overnight. Grill and enjoy!

ReplyDeleteWith the Big BBQ we used at the gathering at the bay, I sprayed it down with easy off at a car wash. We have a small one, and I will probably spray it and rinse it in the kitchen.

ReplyDeleteFortunately I have no BBQ grill, for we don't do much BBQ . It often is too cold or windy. But it's good to warn people for the use of this brush.

Yikes! I'm glad I read this, though we don't barbecue either. Gregg is not one for barbecuing and we seem to get by without a grill.
