I did a post a while back about the closet doors being our finishing project to the home renovation we started in 2006. Turned out, it wasn't. Art realized later that he has a couple more things to finish to be truly, totally finished, but we'll deal with that later.
The closet doors were a bit of a head ache. I wanted to use a clear latex sealer to finish the folding doors. Art felt it should be white. Bloggers agreed with me.
Marriage is a compromise.
Art agreed that I could paint the doors in my office with the clear sealer.
I told him it would be much simpler since a clear sealer was a lot more forgiving and you wouldn't see spots you might have missed.
He was willing to see how it looked in my office (guest/entertainment) room.
After the sealer was applied (2 coats), the doors were a little darker and very smooth. I loved the feel of it.
Art still insisted on white for his office (guest room).
It required more coats (primer and 2 top coats) but I conceded it looked fine too.
As for the hallway closet, I didn't want to make a big deal of it and let him have his way.
After all, he lets me choose which flavor ice cream we should buy.

ReplyDeleteI was just about to comment that they both look very good when I noticed the first commenter said the same! I agree with you that the wood look is more practical besides having that lovely warm feeling. But marriage is about compromise and it sounds as though you have a great marriage!
ReplyDeleteI used to only prefer wood finish on doors and trim, but now everything is painted, and it's harder to keep clean in my opinion. Fingerprints always show up.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of wood stained looks, mainly because if you get a chip or scratches they get harder to fix especially as time and severity goes by. I lived in a room with wood stained walls, so I've gotten sick of it. But I can see the appeal.
ReplyDeleteThe wood unpainted does require less maintenance and will not show the dust and dirt, but they both do look just fine.
ReplyDeleteI vote with Art. Yes white will show dust. White will chip. White is also bright and brings light to the room which is extremely important to me. White gives a non broken look to the room. Natural doors chop it up. Sorry Kay, I'm with Art.

ReplyDeleteBoth the stained and painted doors are beautiful. Kay, your house is so immaculate! With 8 indoor cats (4 litter boxes), I can never keep the house clean. There's always hacked-up hairballs, kitty litter that's been tracked or kicked out, and they're such sloppy eaters. Always wiping and vacuuming. I'm a crazy cat lady that just can't turn a sick cat away. But hey, in my next life, I'll be a Japanese princess!

DeleteFriends of ours showed us their house yesterday and told us we should meet their pet, "Rover". It was one of those Robot vacuum cleaners. I'm really liking the sound of it.

ReplyDeleteOur first home when I got married was a Mililani house and at that time they installed all of those white doors for the closets and kitchens. When we moved out it was hell to clean as they used water based paint and the paint came off. They quickly became grungy within 2 years. I am now in another Mililani house and we have one linen closet with the white and yup same thing. It looks dingy and dirty. Castle and Cooke must have bought containers and containers of these doors at a good price. No, I prefer natural looking after seeing so much of the white. BB

ReplyDeleteLike what you've done. We inherited all white louvered doors from previous owners of our house. The paint jobs were not well done, so door renewal was high on our list of needed renovations. We spray painted them with a coat of primer followed by a final coat. Results have been very good.
