I was hoping the pineapple we planted would wait until our granddaughter arrived to ripen. She loves to pick fruit.
Alas! It didn't wait. Two days before my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter arrived, the fruit got so ripe that ants were crawling all over it. They must have smelled the sugar.
We had to pick it and get the ants off that were hiding in every crevice they could find on the pineapple skin.
Art says the pineapple is sweet. He doesn't much care for pineapple because he says it can hurt his teeth. I don't care for fresh pineapple because I worked in a pineapple cannery for three summers as a trimmer. It was grueling, hot work that really pushed me toward higher education so I wouldn't have to stay there.
Why do we grow it? I freeze it for smoothies. Or we give them away. What the heck! They're just fun to grow!

Can't say I am too fond, but bits and pieces in the right dish are fine.
ReplyDeleteI can't eat fresh pineapple because it makes my tongue sore. If it's canned, it's not so bad. But I usually avoid it myself. :-)
ReplyDeleteI like it fresh or lightly grilled with a brown sugar glaze, but i hate it canned or baked. Too much fresh makes my tongue sore, too.
ReplyDeleteMy mother ruined things for me with pineapple by serving us a "fresh" fruit in the winter: a canned pineapple ring on a lettuce leaf with cottage cheese on top. I know she was only trying to get us to eat things that were good for us, but I hated it.

ReplyDeleteCan't say that I'm much of a fan of pineapple. I use in some in salads etc but seldom eat it by itself, and NEVER buy one I have to cut up.

ReplyDeleteI do think it's cool that you are growing pineapple though. I feel the same way about strawberries as you do about pineapple. I picked the berries for years as a kid, every summer, until I graduated to cannery work, still packing strawberries.

ReplyDeleteI love fresh pineapple, and can get it at Whole Foods already cut up. I find cutting up a whole pineapple to be exhausting. We did this for funeral meals I helped with at church. The lady who brought the pineapples got the rest of us to do the hard work of dissecting them!

ReplyDeleteAre you KIDDING??!! Like fresh pineapple? When we were in Kauai we bought a couple of fresh pineapples EVERY day! For two and a half weeks! I can't get enough of it in the Islands. Here, on the mainland, the pineapples sold in the markets are just so so. Now and then you find one that is sweet and juicy and memorable....but, not often enough to make it worth the $4 or $5 they can cost you. Smith's sells tiny pineapples once in a while for a dollar than are pretty tasty. By the way, my husband spent two years as a young man supervising the pickers in the pineapple fields of Molochai

ReplyDeleteAren't those Maui Gold pineapples they sell at Costco and elsewhere low acid? They are so sweet and we plant them too.
ReplyDeleteFunny that I worked as a trimmer for 3 years too at the cannery but because we were allowed to eat as many pineapples as we wanted, I ate the sweetest, juiciest pineapples ever! I keep trying to find the one that would compare to what the foreladies used to pick for us! And working in the cannery also turned me completely off canned, crushed and pineapple juice!

DeleteOh yes! Our forelady let us have pineapples too, but I just didn't want to eat it. Some girls ate them with shoyu. How funny that my working as a trimmer for three years made me NOT want to eat fresh pineapples. I'm OK with the canned stuff though.
I haven't tried the Maui Gold pineapples because Art's friend is always giving us the pineapples he grows in his garden also.

ReplyDeleteYes, I like fresh pineapple, but have had little opportunity to truly enjoy any that haven't been shipped in. Was on Oahu many years go with occasion to visit one of the commercial pineapple farms. The pineapple was so-o-o tasty! Having canned pineapple years before that when I was young, living in Great Lakes snow country, was a real treat I never tired of. My husband's favorite fresh fruit salad always had pineapple. I started to grow one here years ago, but plants didn't receive adequate water when I had an extended time away during summer so they didn't survive. I haven't started one again.
