As a Father's Day surprise for Art last month, I had my daughter Tiffany order a Fitbit for Art. He's always wanting to know how far he walked, his heart rate, ETC. No, he doesn't need to exercise more, but I thought this would be something he would have fun with.
We'd bought a Fitbit last year for Tiffany's big birthday but after a few months it started losing its charge within a day or two. It's supposed to last for about 5 days. She called Fitbit and after testing it online, they opted to send her a new one. They told her to keep the old one so she gave it to me to try.
It's lots of fun. Gosh! It's not easy to get those 10,000 steps each day.
And there was another problem. For some reason, I kept getting an itchy, irritating heat rash on the inside of my wrist.
I came up with this solution. I used the small remnants of cloth from the keyboard cover I made for my nephew and sewed a cover to wrap around the Fitbit wristband. I used velcro strips to secure the ends and it works perfectly.
One day last week, I was happy to get 12,000 steps. What did Art do? 26,000! Sheesh! So annoying!

I will probably get 28,000 steps on my hike today, which gives me an unusually high average for the week. I like to get 14,000 per day, makes me feel really accomplished! You are doing great, Kay! :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! And unless you take off the cover you don't know till the end of the day how far you've gone :-)
ReplyDeleteDelightful.
ReplyDeleteGlad you all are enjoying your FITBIT. Both George and I love ours. We've had ours for over a year now. We took the advice of my son.. We plug ours in at a certain time each day ---when we know we are sitting (like dinner/TV shows, etc.)... That way we have NEVER had any trouble keeping it charged... It is easy now that we are in the habit..... We try to about 9000 steps per day when we are home (while taking ONE day totally off). We get much more when we are out hiking. Walking is GREAT and we try to take a 2 mile walk EARLY in the mornings before it gets too hot here. ENJOY.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Betsy
I love walking too
ReplyDeleteglad you guys are having fun with your fitbits! I used to get rashes wearing metal watches, no problem with my titanium one.
ReplyDeleteWhat can I say about all you eager beavers? Exercise is just not my thing. I have a new FitBit. I've got to try harder.
ReplyDeleteYou are so smart to come up with your wrist saver! I don't want to know my step number - in my case, ignorance is bliss since I don't walk much.
ReplyDeleteMy ipod has a step counter. i rarely use it. I tried it on the bike but it doesn't do anything. I wondered if it would count each pedal rotation. So here's hoping you catch up to Art. I have a friend who does 50000 per day but all he does is walk starting early in the morning.
ReplyDeleteMy BiLreally uses his, and I think he has upped his fitness although it was always at a good level.
ReplyDeleteIts not a competition just a motivator for you to better your own time. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteI used an app on my iphone for a while, called MapMyWalk, but it was unreliable, so I have gone back to using my pedometer for walking. We have a regular route that we walk most days that is 3.25 miles.
ReplyDeleteMuch of my exercise lately has been gardening, and there it isn't about steps. But being active is important.
Sounds a fun way of keeping track of your daily efforts. I use a Garmin computer to keep a track of heart rate and cadence when running and cycling.
ReplyDeletei got a fit bit for a gift and used it for several months. Trouble is now I am supposed to be taking my blood pressure twice a day and I forget to put the fit bit back on. I am surprised to know that the fitbit does not have to actually touch the skin.
ReplyDeleteVery clever of you! I do not want a Fitbit as it will bring out a rather unfortunate competitive side. Even competing with myself would drive me over an edge I really want to avoid.
ReplyDeleteThing to do is never to ask Art how many he did. I still use my $5 Walmart pedometer but I have never hit 12000 steps. You go girl.
ReplyDeleteI would like to have one but they are too expensive for me.
ReplyDeleteLove my FitBit. Try for a minimum of 10,000 steps per day. Usually meet that goal. Sometimes surpass it.
ReplyDeleteHey, maybe you can market your FitBit cover -- get a little business going.
ReplyDeleteGood looking cover creation. I might just skip a fitbit and wear a cover!
ReplyDelete"So annoying" . . . funny!
ReplyDeleteKay, both you and Art really get in your steps-that's awesome!! I love the cover you made for yours :)!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a creative solution to eliminate the itchy-scratchy wrist band. I love it. Good for you on reaching your goal, Kay. Way to go!!!
ReplyDeleteI hit 15,000 steps last week on my fit-bit. Most of my steps are gleaned from riding my exercise bike and I have to put the fit-bit on my ankle to properly calculate the steps. Walking steps are easy to monitor. I enjoy it most for the sleep monitor to see how restful my sleep is...or isn't.
ReplyDeleteI'm constantly taking my Fitbit off to clean or do dishes and I forget to put it back on. So I bought a spare band and chopped it down to about 2 inches (just enough for the battery) and I stick it inside my sock. So it's on till I shower at night. I put the battery in the other band to sleep with. My steps have increased. :)
ReplyDeleteYou are a creative, clever lass!
