I wrote a while ago about how our family all ended up with a Fitbit. Actually, my granddaughter has a Garmin Activity Tracker. They felt they needed something that was more waterproof for her.
While my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter were in Hawaii, my granddaughter was forever challenging us by asking how many steps we'd taken. Now.... puhleeease... I must tell you that I'm not the competitive sort. Well, sort of.
Art, on the other hand... is. And he's the one who needs to be reminded to exercise the least. There are some nights that he's discovered he hasn't hit 10,000 or is just 200 steps away from 15,000. He'll walk from bedroom to bedroom until he's felt that little rewarding jolt the wrist band gives you when you've met your mark.
I understand my son-in-law even got an exercise bike so that he can get steps in when he finds he's been at the computer too long and hasn't walked enough.
I've found it interesting to keep track of how much sleep I'm getting and the quality of rest it is. The funny thing is... when Art takes a nap, the Fitbit gives him credit for that rest period. Whenever I take a nap, even for an hour, Fitbit does not think I'm sleeping. I guess it's true that I'm not a gentle sleeper.
Did I tell you about the time that I bopped Art on his face one night when I was sleeping? And yes... of course I really was sleeping.
By the way, it's 4:30 PM right now and I've got 7,549 steps. I wonder what Art has. I think I'll go walk around the room a bit and wave my arms.

I love my Fitbit. Most of my steps come from riding my exercise bike and so I usually hit 10,000 fairly easily. Often I reach 15,000 and once I even hit 25,000. I will admit that once I got 4,000 steps just driving my tractor. Now that was a great way to get steps.
ReplyDeleteI carry my iPhone with me when I'm exercising and it counts my steps for me. I find my weekly average is usually around 13,000 per day, but then again, I go on a long hike at least once a week, and that makes my number go up quickly. I'm competitive too, with my sister in Florida. She doesn't get any steps from her swim for an hour each morning, and she still beats me with steps! :-)
ReplyDeletedon't make me buy one! don't make me buy one! LOL (I have been looking at them. they have some pretty and pretty cool ones now...)
ReplyDeleteI need one of those...some day.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lot of fun this entry is. I walked quite a lot in vegas, and I want to keep doing that now we are home again.
ReplyDeleteMiy inlaws don't sleep together because he is too active, even almost violently so.
ReplyDeleteI need to get my tracker out again, it does motivate you to walk more...lol!
ReplyDeleteinteresting activity
ReplyDeleteWe love our FITBITS.... They certainly are a good reminder to make sure we stay active. One feature I love is the hourly exercise... They want us to walk at least 250 steps in an hour ----so that is challenging when I am slaving away on the computer or having dinner, etc.... I set my hours from 6 a.m.- 6 p.m. and try to be active at least for 10 of 12 hours during that time.... That keeps me alert when sitting relaxing ---to get up and move around more....
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great week. I published a blog post this morning showing some of our Hostas....
Hugs,
Betsy
Fitbit has been on my wish list for a while but like your granddaughter, I was looking for something waterproof. I'll give Garmin Activity Tracker a look. Thanks for the reminder to get up and move.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you guys are having fun with those fitbits, and getting good exercise!
ReplyDeleteSo funny. I have friends who swear their devices make them get more exercise.
ReplyDeleteAll kidding aside, it's important to get some good exercise. Walking is one of the best kinds of exercise.
ReplyDeleteI have so far avoided the fitbit...I am much too compulsive for it to be a healthy thing for me, I think. Interesting, though, that it can track your sleep as well.
ReplyDeleteKay, we now know that you get all your exercise from bopping Art on the face! Watch out, Art!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like fitbits are motivating. I can actually get more accurate readings of steps and miles with my pedometer, and we do have a phone app too, called MapMyWalk. Of course none of them measure sleep.
ReplyDeleteI have started pool walking and swimming. I keep moving for an hour in the water and really like it. Do that or an ocean swim three times a week. Hiking on weekends and evening walks are nice, too.
ReplyDeleteThese are activities I like for their own sake and not just for exercise, so I don't have to force myself to do them.
i had to check my blood pressure twice a day and took off my fitbit and got out of the habit of wearing it...must put it back on.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a Fitbit, but I DO use my phone health app as a step counter. However, I don't take the phone into the gym, so I have to add the classes (as workouts). I have decreed that on days I go to the gym I don't have to reach my 10,000 step goal.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter gave my husband one, he loves it... Michelle
