Mom gets up a couple of hours before we do and always empties the dishwasher. We run the dishwasher about every 2-3 days. There have been several occasions when she's emptied the dishwasher although I hadn't turned it on the night before. Because we rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, it's not always easy to tell if they've been washed or not. Her eyesight is also not very good. Therefore, I have to try to remember what was in the dishwasher so I can find it and put it back in.
When we were in Illinois this summer Tiffany found a nifty magnet for the dishwasher that seemed like the perfect solution.
You could stick the magnet on the dishwasher so people would know if the dishes are clean or not. I guess we're not the only people with this problem.
Unfortunately, when we got home to Hawaii we discovered that because our dishwasher has a stainless steel front, the magnet wouldn't stick.
Sooooo.... after thinking about it, I hot glued the magnet onto a block of wood and set it on the counter.
Worked like a charm. No more dirty dishes being put away. Now all I have to do is remember to turn on the dishwasher.

My Whirlpool dishwasher clicks when I open the door to unload the clean dishes. That's the only way I know the dishes have already been clean. It's hard to remember, isn't it?

ReplyDeleteI WISH I only ran the dishwasher every 2-3 days. Honestly, I run it about 2-3 times a day. However, my dishwasher does have a light on it under the word "clean," so there usually isn't any issue with that. I like your solution though.
ReplyDeleteThey say the modern dishwasher has sensors that can tell how dirty the dishes are. LOL I too rinse mine before they go in. Who knows if they are really getting clean. For a few weeks I tried not rinsing them, and the filter clogged up then nothing got clean. Sometimes all you can do is laugh at yourself.

ReplyDeleteI hang a file folder over the handle of the dishwasher with "These Dishes Are Clean" written in large letters.
There's a light next to the word "clean" on my dishwasher too. But for some unknown reason I don't pay attention to it. I like the "clean/dirty" gadget.

good idea. we put a dry dishrag in the dishwasher after we unload it, then if you open it and there is a dishrag on the top rack you know the dishes are dirty, when you wash the disher you remove the dishrag. Works like a charm. My hubby rinses dishes too so clean they don't need a dishwasher...lol!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Quite clever. I run the dishwasher once a day, after dinner, and put away the clean ones before we go to bed. This routine seems to help avoid putting away dirty dishes that simply "look" clean :-)
ReplyDeleteFascinating how many folks have different, or slightly different, solutions to a kitchen problem. When in doubt, we simply ask each other if the dishes are clean. Of course, even that solution has a problem--we both have to be home when the question comes up!
ReplyDeleteWe don't have a dishwasher here in Hawaii since they are big power and water hogs and we rely solely on solar power. I don't miss it, especially because I'm not raising kids anymore.

ReplyDeleteI love my dishwasher - though I also have the problem of forgetting if the dishes were cleaned, or just rinsed. Sometimes I would start putting away the seemingly clean dishes and then discover - ooops, the wash cycle wasn't run. Then I would have to back track and put back the deceptive dishes and run it through the dishwasher.
ReplyDeleteI actually want a dishwasher drawer - something small that I can run every day with my very small load. But I do love having a big one too, especially when Thanksgiving (yikes!) rolls around.
That happens a lot at our house. Great solution.
ReplyDeleteMy dishwasher does tell me when the dishes are clean. I have read many times that there is no need to rinse dishes before putting them in the dish washer, but I tried that once and had not very clean dishes at the end of the wash cycle so I always rinse. The "clean" light lied to me. I have an expensive washer with sensor for amount of soil, heat boost, sanitizer, etc. Frankly I miss my old, cheap washer that did not irritate me with flashing lights and random beeps and got the dishes just as clean.
