Someone recently sent us holiday Starbucks gift cards. It was very kind and generous of them. It just so happens that whenever we do our once-a-week walking at the mall, there's a Starbucks there that we all visit to sip and chat. I never used to go to Starbucks before because... well... it's expensive and I wasn't all that much of a coffee drinker. That has changed since I've started walking there.
My dear friend, Dave showed me the Starbucks app for my cellphone that seemed awfully convenient. He told me I could enter the gift card I'd gotten from my kids for my birthday onto my phone and just use the phone to pay for whatever I get.
I loaded the app onto my phone. It asked for the gift card number.
OK... That was easy enough.
Then it asked for the 8 digit code.
Where the heck is that?
I hunted all over the card and couldn't find it. I was afraid to take off the sticker next to the card number thinking it was like the scratch cards we get that says the card is invalid if removed.
I finally decided to gamble and removed it. What do you know? There's the 8 digit code!
I did it! Yay! I now had a lovely balance.
OK....
Now I've received these additional gift cards so I decided to add it to the app. I did everything I did before but the balance remained the same. I added the same numbers again and the app said I'd already used the card.
What??? Then why didn't my balance show it? I checked the payment history and it didn't show what I added. Arrghhh...
So I called Starbucks. Aaron, who answered my call was a very sweet fellow. He first told me that the app was for my original gift card and that both gift cards were registered, but I could merge the two.
"But where's the card balance for this one?" I asked.
He said........ Uhhhh... what did he say? I can't remember. He very patiently and cheerfully tried to explain how to use the app. I confess to being totally befuddled so he asked me if I would like him to merge the accounts together for me. I very gratefully accepted his offer. (There was a lot of befuddlements as he asked me for the account number, etc. which he had to tell me where to look to find, etc.)
Then I told him I had another card. He quickly said he could do that card for me too.
(I did complain about the 8-digit code. I told him I was ready to get a magnifying glass to try to figure where they hid it. He laughed out loud.)
Aaron also mentioned that I could manage my accounts online. So I asked if it would be easier for me to do that next time. Did he stifle a chuckle there?
"Uuuuuhhhh...." said Aaron. "You should truly feel free to call us and let us do it for you," he reassured me. "We are very happy to help."
I'm wondering what he told his friends about his experience with me. Whatever the case, we wished each other a "Happy Holidays" and I hope I get to talk to him again if I get another card.
All I can say is I've now got a lot of coffee or tea to drink.

Just think of the wonderful Christmas present you gave Aaron. Now he's got another "old lady" story to tell his co-workers. I give those kind of presents to call centers myself. LOL
ReplyDeleteI am so happy when the young techs are willing to help. I am pretty tech savvy, but living outside the working world, it gets hard to keep up. I also got the app this week for all of my customer key chain cards, so now I just have to remember to use my phone. I wonder if it works for gift cards as well?
ReplyDeleteI have noticed people using their phones at the check out in various stores and wondered what they were doing. I underutilize my phone -- making calls and texting. I am going to look into that app for key chain cards though. That would really lighten up the load I tend to carry around.
ReplyDeleteI need to add something to my granddaughter's phone today, and it will only happen when I call and have a tech do it, step by step.
ReplyDeleteMy husband uses his phone for all of his Starbucks purchases, and there are many. He is fortunate to have friends and coworkers who give him Starbucks cards as they know how much he enjoys them. He even gets gift cards FROM Starbucks because he is such a good customer. He does all the management of the cards from his computer and then uses the app to buy the coffee. Life has really been simplified with our smart phones. I manage my Target purchases from my phone.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, I have the app, I have no problem loading it, or adding to the balance, or checking the balance, but I still hand over the pretty card at the store, not my phone. dur. LOL
ReplyDeleteI go to a local coffee shop and avoid Starbucks just because it's so expensive. I use it when I travel, or when I'm out of town, though. I laughed at the story of your gift cards and your new app. I hope it all works for you now! :-)
ReplyDelete:)
ReplyDeleteYou are wonderful. I'm to the point where I would just take the cards to Starbucks. LOL
ReplyDeletetechnology is for the young...lol!
ReplyDeleteIt's all just too complicated for me!
ReplyDeleteYou go, girl!!!
ReplyDeleteOkay, I mean Oh Kay! Now how hard would it be to carry that thin piece of plastic?
ReplyDeleteOf course, maybe I'm jealous that I don't have a smart phone. Our emergency dumb phone is so old that it has a rotary dial, which makes it very bulky to carry around. ;)
He sounds helpful, I would be the same as you.
ReplyDeleteYour story reminds me of several times when the app just did not make sense to me. One was Papa John's Pizza. Papa John's lets me order by phone!!!
ReplyDeleteI find it easier online because I can choose all my options and never forget a thing
DeleteHow wonderful to have found a helpful fellow with a great attitude. Glad he was able to make your life easier.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this info. I gave my grandkids these cards. Of course they are probably way ahead of me and figured everything out.
ReplyDeleteI, also, never used to go to Starbucks but then I got an email about their "Starbucks for Life" game (2 free game plays per day can be accessed online after signing in) and I didn't win anything but did sign up for the Star Rewards program. After that, I got hooked on trying to make Gold level and just missed getting the required 300 stars on my anniversary date. To get the stars, I would sign up for promotions (had to accept them online) and do certain purchases on certain dates to get LOTS of stars.
ReplyDeleteAs a result of this, I have bought so many iced chai lattes without ice (tried it and loved it after you posted about it) and have also reloaded my Starbucks card/app several times and spent quite a bit of money at Starbucks. I finally got the hang of using my phone to order ahead and pay.
Starbucks is a REALLY savvy company. A marketing guru I took a class from called it the most affordable name recognized luxury brand, and thus, its succeeds in business so well.
I have not used the phone app for Starbucks. I do have an online account and when I get gift cards I add them to my existing Starbucks Gold Card, which is what I use to pay instead of the phone app. I find using a card to be easier than using the phone. When I want to add to the card, I just have money transferred from my credit card to my Starbucks card account by the barista when I buy coffee.
ReplyDeleteThat Aaron is a gem. It is always a pleasant surprise when a company provides, efficient, competent, friendly souls to help those of us with lots of questions. Glad it all worked out for you, Kay! Holly
ReplyDeleteIt's always wonderful to get somebody who knows what they're doing on the help line.
