A long, long time ago our son came home and told us that his high school science teacher had told the class that antiperspirants were bad for you because of the aluminum based compound in the product.
Since then, I've tried to use only deodorants. My daughter sent this Greeench deodorant powder a while back because she knew I like to use products that are as natural as possible.
I did try it a couple of times and then went back to my deodorant stick.
Problem is, I just developed some kind of allergy to it. I don't know why. I just started itching under my arms. No fun.
So I went back to trying the Greench powder and the itch went away and I stayed drier. Now I love it!
Since I'm writing this post I thought I'd check up on whether antiperspirants are actually bad for you.
According to Web MD's article Antiperspirant Safety: Should You Sweat It? this whole antiperspirant scare has been floating around the internet, regurgitated and then spread again despite the fact that research on its dangers has not been replicated and proven. Aluminum or parabens do not get absorbed into your skin enough to cause breast cancer, Alzheimer's or kidney disease.
Phew! OK... I'll use the Greench and maybe go back to trying an antiperspirant again.
Maybe.
POSTSCRIPT: I've discovered that Greeench works well on days that are cooler, but if you're really sweating, it doesn't do much. Sigh...

Alright Kay, now I am awaiting your toilet paper post:-) Good to know about antiperspirants being okay.
ReplyDeleteAs I've aged, I sweat less and less from under my arms and more from my head and feet! Good information about antiperspirants. I've used a natural product for ages now. This one looks really interesting. :-)
ReplyDeleteI did that little research experiment about a year ago, I hate that these urban legends grow into huge deals and the fact that our media now regurgitates these false things as new and important stories, well, it is Not Great.
ReplyDeleteI use a clinical deodorant which was sent to me as a sample and I really like it but I don't think it is available in the US. The closest thing might be the Dove version I found online. I only need to apply it once every two days, and one container tends to last me more than 6 months which is great. :)
I never know what to believe these days.
DeleteThanks for this great news as antiperspirants work for us!
ReplyDeleteI remember reading that some people don't need deodorant or antiperspirants as they don't sweat
ReplyDeleteI prefer natural products whenever possible. I use an antiperspirant very rarely, but if I am going to be in a crowded, stressful situation I am glad to have it around. I have had my Secret so long now, I guess I better check about expiration dates!
ReplyDeleteYes, I find a deodorant/antiperspirant that works well, but in a year or so, I have to change brands. I'm one of those whose perspiration smells, darn it. So I constantly war against myself.
ReplyDeleteInteresting post. Even had a PhD nursing professor not use anything for awhile because of the old cancer causing scare. She decided it wasn't an item to do without.
ReplyDeleteI broke out with one, and didn't realize there were expiration dates on them!
Used to use Clinical strength Secret and they must've changed the formula: twice I've broken out, so I gave up. Will just keep using my Men's (yep, you get more for less cost) Degree solid. Still trying to figure out how to use that last inch that doesn't spiral up for use. It's alot of the weight of the mere ounces we buy.
Nurses DO sweat....Linda in Kansas
Expiration dates? Yikes! I had no idea!
DeleteNeither did my dermatologist...
DeleteLinda
I use them despite the negative press, covfefe
ReplyDeleteToo funny!
Deletemodern day problems...lol! I think i like powdeer better too.
ReplyDelete"Aluminum or parabens do not get absorbed into your skin enough " Enough? No thanks. I don't want even a little poison
ReplyDeleteThanks. I've always wondered.
ReplyDeleteI need the antiperspirant part more than the deodorant part, so I've never given it up (and it seems our summers are just getting hotter). I guess if I develop Alzheimer's disease, my sister will be telling me "I told you so", but of course, I won't have any idea what she's talking about!
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I don't care for with antiperspirants is that it's hard to wash off during your shower.
DeleteI do use an antiperspirant/deodorant but was not aware of it. Hum. Good to know I am probably OK.
ReplyDeleteI develop the same reaction to anything I use after a few months and have to change to something else. I have tried everything on the market and it doesn't matter what I try. They all have limited effectiveness and cause itching eventually.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to know this. I'll have to switch to different products and see what happens.
DeleteI use a crystal salt block on a daily basis and an antiperspirant if I am going out and need to "stay dry".
ReplyDeleteI also worry about applying the antiperspirant, so I do limit using it as much as possible and I make sure that I don't shave or pluck just before - just in case it creeps into my pores.
Actually, ever since I was diagnosed with Hashimoto Thyroiditisa, I hardly sweat. I suppose that is one of the symptoms, so I am doing things to strengthen up my system and will be glad when I do sweat again.
I use an unscented antiperspirant, but underarm sweat is not such a problem now. I sweat mostly from my head.
ReplyDeleteThis is interesting. I use deodorant only, but maybe the scare over AP is wrong. I just read somewhere that the whole red meat and saturated fat thing may have been wrong based on bad interpretation of data. It's good to keep an open mind, I guess.
