Art and I were at the City Hall satellite station waiting to pay for our property tax. Yes, I know we could mail it in, but for some reason Art likes to pay it in person. That way, we can do some shopping and maybe go out for lunch later.
After about a 20 minute wait, we got to the Express counter. The young woman was very efficient. While she worked stamping all our paper work, she asked how long we were retired and then said, "I hope my husband and I are like you guys in another 20 or 30 years."
We were rather taken aback and asked why.
"Look at you guys," she said. "Here you both are together and you look so happy. I want that."
Art and I don't hold hands. I wonder if we ever did. We don't say, "I love you." We're just happy and comfortable together and wouldn't know what we'd do without the other. So I guess, even without the public physical confirmation, she somehow picked up that feeling of comfort and affection.
Art and I left the building and smiled at each other. It was nice.
We are wishing the same contentment for the sweet young woman and her husband too.
And ummmm.... when she said she wanted to be like us in another 20-30 years, it would have been more accurate to say another 40-50 years.
Happy Valentines Day, everybody!

you are a wonderful inspirational couple, Happy Valentines Day!
ReplyDeleteThey charge us a fee to pay by mail, phone or internet. So we just walk in...
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentine's Day to two of my favorite people. Love that picture of the two of you. And yes, you exude love for each other without any outward display. We don't hold hands either but that doesn't lessen our love for each other.
ReplyDeleteThat is so sweet -- and a great Valentine's Day post. I would say that your shared happiness definitely comes through. I hope the young clerk finds that in her marriage twenty years and even forty years out. It is what the world needs.
ReplyDeleteAwww...... :-)
ReplyDeleteawwww sweet! you guys are the perfect couple! have a happy valentine's day!
ReplyDeleteThank you for spreading happiness.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great photo of the two of you. I am so happy for you!
ReplyDeleteYou're so fun and funny! I've now been married 16 years, in both marriages!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou obviously look contented together.
ReplyDeleteYour affection and admiration for eachother comes through your writing and pictures. You can't hide it. Happy Valentine's day.
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentines day to both of you. Yes, you look wonderful together. Yes, I am smiling at you over the ocean.
ReplyDeletecongrats to those of us who are still together...it's not always easy but so comforting...
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentine's Day to you and Art Kay, you guys are blessed it's true.
ReplyDeleteHow nice that was! You are so fortunate to still have one another. I lost my Bob in 2010.
ReplyDeleteAppreciate one another while you still have one another.
How sweet! From the way you two get along for projects and medical stuff, I'd never guess that you don't hold hands. Ok, so, my nursing advice for Valentine's Day, is to try holding hands, that is, if you both walk at the same speed; or even when just sitting on a park bench. Even one hand in the car is nice, so the driver has one hand on the wheel! Nice for kissing the hand when you need to restrain from PDA, too. Hands can say alot without a word being spoken. Better than texting. But what you've been doing for many years seems to work. Aloha, Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteUmmm... Art always keeps two hands on the wheel actually. And yes, we’ve tried holding hands today but gave it up after a minute. It didn’t feel comfortable. He’s more comfortable putting his arm over my shoulder with my arm around his waist.
DeleteI was thinking about my almost 49 years of marriage this morning too, and thinking how fortunate I am to be in such a comfortable and, yes, loving relationship with my life partner and best friend. We were in the car and I leaned over and said "I love you". That does happen here once in a great while. If we get any comments about us, it is something like "You two are so cute!" That will do.
ReplyDeleteYou two are so cute too! Happy Valentine's Day!
Happy Valentine's day to you. A complement like that makes you feel pretty good.
ReplyDeleteHold hands and say "I love you." It won't hurt. On the other hand I agree with the clerk that you are a very happy couple, more power to you. My father never said he loved me. I know he did, but he never said it. I told my brother the same thing; he laughed and said "I once forced Dad to say he loved me by directly asking him."
ReplyDeleteMy wife and I used to play a little game that started at 100% and went up from there. "How much do you love me?" "I love you 100%." "Is that all? I love you 110%." "Well, I love you 120%." And so on....
ReplyDeleteThat is such a sweet memory, Hank. I love it. I don’t know why it’s so weird for us to say the actual words to each other. When we’ve done it, it’s sounded forced and embarrassed. For us, knowing is enough.
DeleteThis is so sweet. Kay and Art, you are the best couple ever. What a pleasure and inspiration and blessing to know you.
