This is something that hasn't happened in 150 years. It's being called a "trifecta" which is a celestial event that has three things happening at once.
It's called Blue because it's the second full moon in a month. It's a Blood moon because it will appear red and it's Super because it's closer to the Earth and will appear bigger. Oh... and it's supposed to be an eclipse as well. Totality was going to start at 2:51 AM. Arrrghhh!
Oh.... and on top of that it was going to be an overcast night with a chance of thunderstorms. Do you think that would stop Art?
"I'm going to set my timer to just wake myself up," he reassured me. "You can sleep and I'll just wake you if by small chance we can see it. Just think how great it will be for your blog."
I figured it was going to rain anyway so I had nothing to worry about. Have I mentioned that weather forecasts in Hawaii are notoriously wrong?
Sure enough, he got up at 3:00.... and woke me saying, "There's a chance. It's not totally overcast."
Sigh...
I got my robe on and went outside. Yes, it was more or less overcast but there were these holes in the clouds when the moon would come through.
Ummmm... the moon was somewhat larger, but not all that much since it was high in the sky and not at the horizon.
We had to bring a tripod outside to steady my hand to take the photo.
And here it is.
The Super Blue Blood Moon!
Yay!
I'm going to need a nap.

wow,, thats the money shot lol,,, beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! I would definitely be happy to have awakened for that. Great photo.
ReplyDeleteJust think of all the things in life you would have missed if not for Art. The eclipse was not total here and the pink glow was fleeting. However, it occur at a more decent time! Catching a super moon at its rise is the best way to appreciate that.
ReplyDeletewinnie and i were out around 4:00 am and the moon was awesome but not colored. it did have lots of colored rings around it and was very bright. at the time the event was to happen, clouds rolled in and covered it entirely. at least i got to see part of it. oh well...once in a blue moon!
ReplyDeleteHooray for you. We were completely fogged in.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great shot. By the time I woke, the moon was sitting on the horizon. I missed it.
ReplyDeleteI've been really enjoying your changing banner photographs. They are really nice.
nice capture, I didn't get to see it myself
ReplyDeleteGreat shot, I heard Hawaii had a good view, it was overcast in Toronto but pretty spectacular the night before.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is beautiful! We just had the supermoon which was stunning.
ReplyDeleteI am sure you gave Art a big thank you! That is an incredible sight. I did see the moon at 6:30 last night but it didn't look like that.
ReplyDeleteIt's a bloody good result. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the photo. We didn't have to wake up to see it.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot and worth the loss of sleep. I saw part of the eclipse but missed the blood part.
ReplyDeleteWonderful job! Enjoyed the story behind it too
ReplyDeleteWOW! Thanks for getting up!
ReplyDeleteThat was worth losing some sleep over, Kay. It's fabulous! :-)
ReplyDeletegreat photo, I slept through mine after getting up at 5 am...
ReplyDeleteWow! Great shot. Good for you!
ReplyDeleteGood job! We didn't even try, but there was cloud cover anyway. I'll enjoy your photo instead.
ReplyDeleteGood for you to get up and get a credible photo to show us. Here there was dense overcast.
ReplyDeleteMahalo for crawling out of bed and checking out the Hawaii skies. That's an AMAZING photo; worth framing for sure. We were overcast in K.C. So, did your Mom stay asleep?
ReplyDeleteBeee-uuu-tiful! Linda in Kansas
Mom was definitely sleeping. I wouldn't have wanted her standing outside for 45 minutes with mosquitoes around waiting for a break in the cloud cover.
DeleteWell done! It's just way too cold here for me to do this!!!!
