I haven't been using Facebook for the last several months. I just can't trust it. And yet, it's been hard to completely kill my account. So it was still open.. but just unused.
Then, the other day I got a friendly text message from my classmate through Facebook's Messenger app.
I had no reason to suspect it wasn't from my classmate.
But then...
Something just didn't feel right so I wrote her an email.
She answered that her Messenger app had been HACKED and that I shouldn't answer it.
Well, it was too late for that.
I already had.
So I just BLOCKED any more texts from her on the Messenger app and am now very leery of anything Facebook.
So I guess that does it.
I should be, might be terminating my Facebook account and with it would go Messenger and sadly, so many memories. What to do? What to do?
What can you trust anymore?

I have all my settings on Facebook to the most private. Nobody can see anything about my friends, and I recently removed my birthday from being able to be seen. I didn't know that Messenger could be hacked! Thanks for the information, Kay.

ReplyDeleteI closed my Facebook account because of the hacking. It's a good idea in theory, but the reality of it is hard to take.
ReplyDeleteI've never had a Facebook account. Never saw any point to it. I get along just fine without it. If anybody wants to contact me they can e-mail me.

ReplyDeleteI also am a dinosaur and never signed up to Facebook. I know 3 of my 5 siblings use it and I miss some of the communication and photos but when I viewed the Facebook account my sister signed up for my mom and was aghast by the amount of junk on there. I'll stick to email and the telephone.
ReplyDeleteI'm very sorry. I use messenger for my work with the ACS, and family. You can limit who you interact with. Try instagram. I can't use it as I don't take pictures with my phone, but you do.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what you do, or where you go, you are apt to run into deceptive and bad people. You take all those trips, traveling for weeks at a time, with no fears. I find that to be amazing since so much can go wrong when traveling. So, Facebook is a piece of cake in comparison, in my book. I cannot imagine giving up my social media, probably the same way you can't imagine giving up travel.

ReplyDeleteI seldom use Messenger, but I do continue to use Facebook every day. It is much less interesting now that so many limits have been put on it, but i still connect with friends and family when they post, and I link my blog posts to it because that's the only way friends and family find it. I am really not that concerned. If I was, I would have to shut down blogging and Facebook and email shopping on line and just about everything electronic.

ReplyDeleteWe live in a climate of fear today. I work everyday to keep down my own level of fear. Facebook and Messenger are not on my fear list. I would have to stop using the computer completely to avoid hacking and scam scares. I'm not willing to do that. My blog had foreign trolls on it at one time. Social media is the way society communicates today. Yes there are blips but I'm not going to cut myself off from it only to punish myself. I'm just an old woman. What do I do that would be that interesting to hack into? I watch my bank account closely and my bank watches it. I still order online. If a blip happens I deal with it and keep going. I refuse to cower in fear at this time. Maybe someday but not now. For those I know who have removed themselves from social media, that's their choice. It's my choice not to chase them down to communicate. I can't allow myself to live in constant fear.
ReplyDeleteI was hacked once and the person who said he was with Microsoft said hackers had frozen my screen but in order to repair it, he wanted money. He said not to turn off my computer. I suspected a scam of some sort and turned off my screen anyhow. That unfroze it and since I have signed up for the Cox Communications IT help, I contacted them and that man went through my computer and deleted everything the scammer had planted there. That service just costs me $10 a month and they are available for help 24/7. Every once in awhile I use the service when my son, who is an IT, is in Europe and unavailable to me. My neighbor, who is 84 was also hacked by the same person and he charged her $500 to unfreeze her screen. I contacted my IT on her computer and he cleaned up her drive too but she had already lost her $500. We have to be very careful anymore. I never follow any link someone sends me. They are invariably a scam.

ReplyDeleteFacebook is, for me, "my letter to the world/ Which never wrote to me." (poem by Emily Dickinson). It has been good for me and it is my equivalent of your excellent blog. I have friends who are suspicious of Facebook, but they use email every day. Falling behind in technology would mean I can't communicate with friends and family. We live in an age of suspicion and paranoia, yet I am flying the flag today, Memorial Day, because I want to transcend the quotidian insults to our pursuit of personal happiness, and go for the gold, the best that can be reasonably achieved. As The Animals sang in rock and rollese, "It's my life, and I'll do what I want." The other half of that truth is the family, society, friendly and group orientation that the Hawaiian spirit of "ohana" stresses.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that, in my humble opinion, based on your blog anecdotes, Art takes chances a lot, more than most people, actually. But I can see he sizes things up and figures out how to prevail. He's not going to go down in flames. And how about your son who travels all over the place doing exciting things like being a firefighter or the Peace Corps? To me it adds up to a well-balanced, happy family. Lucky you guys!

ReplyDeleteI hardly use Facebook anymore. I terminated my personal account and only have one for Honolulu Aunty. Sometimes I will post something neat on it if I am sent a link that inspires but I am turned off by the random paid posts that populate "my" page.
ReplyDeleteSince I don't really understand all this internet stuff, I just do the simple tasks, and write on my blog from time to time. Someone once did change my administrator name - not sure how they did that - but it was easily fixed and there seems to be no more invasion from unwanted invaders.
sorry to hear this Kay, I closed my Facebook just a while ago, I received a message from a friend well it wasn't a friend, I no longer trust Facebook, I'm finished with them, I deleted all my content, took me forever and closed it,,the end. Thank you for bring this to attention,,What a joy and pleasure its been travelling with you these past few weekslol, I loved every photo!
