It's that time of year again. Hurricane Season. When we moved back here 10 years ago, we were more diligent about the hurricane warnings. We stocked up on food, water and emergency supplies.
However, since that time, we've been rather lax. After seeing the Hurricane warnings again on TV and newspaper, I checked our water supply and saw that the bottles of water had expired 2 years ago. And food... well... we didn't have anything in particular saved except a small box of Vienna sausages (expiration date: 2020).
It's sort of like the boy who cried wolf. After a while, you think it's not going to happen.
For the people of Hawaii who suffered through Hurricane Iniki in 1992, the warnings are taken very seriously as they should.
You just never know.
So this time, we did a bit of stocking up.
It's not really enough, but more than we've done before. I've also filled several empty gallon vinegar jugs full of water for the toilet, etc. and Art is cleaning out and water barrel.
We're going to do more shopping for some.... hmmmm... what do people in Hawaii stock up on, oh yes... Spam. It lasts a LONG time.
UPDATE: It's sounding scary. We're going out to buy more supplies today. They're saying the hurricane is moving closer to the islands than expected and will reach Oahu tomorrow and onto Friday.

ReplyDeletePeople go nuts here, like 3 hour drive away from the shore. You'll have reason to be concerned. We are inconvenienced for like 2 days at best.
ReplyDeleteSounds wise to get in some supplies. I always remember many years ago when there was a shipping or dock strike and my bro complained toilet paper was beginning to run short. Ever since I make sure to have some on hand for earthquake preparedness, plus I even went to surplus store and bought an inexpensive travel potty in case flushing commode or water for it out of service. Absolutely spam on hand, besides I’ve liked it since I was a kid in the Midwest and thought it was a treat when mom would get a can. Hope your island and others avoid the storm entirely, or the worst of it as I think of family on Big Island near the volcano.
ReplyDeleteMaybe water purification tablets? Candles and batteries? Know where your first aide kit is located. I have friends in Hilo and so worry about them!!
ReplyDeleteIt is looking ominous. A 5 is a very husky storm. I sure hope it misses you entirely but having lived in Florida for many years, it never hurts to be prepared. Extra toilet water as well as drinking water is always a good bet. Stay safe and let us know.

ReplyDeleteWhile I have been only paying slight attention to the news lately I have heard a bit about the hurricane approaching the islands and immediately thought of you of course. I hope you will still be able to communicate with us as things happen and that you will escape unharmed.
ReplyDeleteI just heard about this while catching up on news after a wonderfully stress few days off the grid. I think Mother Nature is really upset that we are not paying attention to her needs and her warnings are getting louder and louder. Stay safe.
