I'm sure there are pet peeves that are far worse, but this one really bugs me.
It's those expiration dates on OTC (Over the Counter) medicines and other food items.
I had the hardest time seeing the expiration date on this Benedryl box. Come one! Couldn't they even print it in black?
Then there's those spaghetti bottles that have the tiny black expiration dates printed over the dark surface so it's near impossible to find. Arrrghhh!

You would think that big companies could higher designers that would take visibility into consideration. I find all sorts of products that are poorly designed in that respect.

ReplyDeleteLots of the food ones are not expiration dates but "best by" dates. And, yes, difficult to read and sometimes even difficult to find. Poor designing.
ReplyDeleteAh, yes: it's usually embossed so as not to need ink. Pretty sure they don't want to make it easy. I always make sure any samples from my docs are current. I have caught a CVS or WalMart keeping out of date diabetes supplies or testing kits on the shelf. Took it to the pharmacist so it wouldn't be sold. Except for asthma rescue inhalers, I don't mind if my expire date on pills or syrups is 1-2 years past. I think it's a bit of a marketing - supply scam. That's presuming you always store them correctly, out of heat and humidity. A good reason not to store your meds in the humid bathroom. Linda in Kansas

DeleteI wish they would put out a list of what can safely be used past the date. I know a lot can with no harm to the patient and no disintegration of the drug. That would help a lot of people who can't afford to toss much needed medication they might have to use.

ReplyDeleteSometimes it is just hard to find. Sometimes on the label, sometimes on the cap and often on the bottom. Standardization would be helpful
ReplyDeleteI find it difficult to find and read so many expiration dates. I have little storage space so I tend not to stock up so it really isn't a big issue. Although I did just yesterday find a jar of mustard that was best by two years ago. I guess I have stopped using a lot of mustard.

That’s a frustration to me. I keep a magnifying glass at the ready in a couple places including the kitchen and sometimes need extra light added. Maybe with more older people pressure will be brought to bear to change it.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you some best before dates might as well not be on the product. Sometimes if you can look on the case you might find the best before date.

ReplyDeleteMy pet peeve is similar. Why do the TV sets, and all electronic devices write black on black? I have to get a flashlight some times to try to decipher the words on the front of one of these devices.
