We went with our friends, Dave and Diane to Crazy Rich Asians recently. We loved it! It was fun to see an all Asian cast. The movie was sumptuously filmed showing many of the highlights found in Singapore.
Understand, it is literally about crazy rich Asians so if you want something more realistic, this isn't it. It's a rom-com. Boy gets girl, boy loses girl and boy gets girl. Or is it the other way around? It's a fairy tale. It shows some of the Chinese culture and perhaps also the fact that riches alone don't necessarily bring you happiness.
Speaking to friends, so many of us loved Awkwafina best. She was the comic relief and was the sort of girlfriend you wish everybody could have.
However, the fun part about this outing had to do with the popcorn!
We went to a Consolidated Theater on a Tuesday which is when tickets are only $7.
Well, we must have been crazy also for we ordered the Large popcorn because you could get a refill (not that we ever needed a refill).
Diane and Dave had done the same thing. Then they asked if we wanted the refill now and craziness once more ensued and we took it.
That was a LOT of popcorn. A LOT LOT LOT of popcorn.
We laughed while walking into the theater, wondering how we were going to eat all this popcorn. Dave offered his to the people next to him and they were thrilled. I offered to pour a lot of mine into a couple of other seniors' boxes who were sitting there with only a couple of cups of popcorn. They hesitated at first, but when I showed them what we had, they happily accepted my offering.
We still had quite a bit of popcorn, but ate it all. Granted, we didn't eat that much dinner that night.
Oh... we also made a pact that next time we go to the movies we would just have one person buy the large popcorn and share the other bag.
Granted we go to see maybe 3-4 movies a year. I wonder what we'll see next and I wonder if we'll remember about the popcorn.

ReplyDeleteIt was a little fluffy for my taste (the movie that is) but I enjoyed it all the same. And you sure had a LOT of popcorn! :-)

ReplyDeleteGlad you had fun! Did you know you can roll the top of the sack and take the popcorn home? If your Mom doesn't get to it, it does taste fairly decent the next day. I guess in Hawaii you'd have to keep the humidity out. It's a whole grain I think, hence it's healthy. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeletePopcorn gets soggy so fast in Hawaii. I really prefer fresh popcorn. But then there's that Indiana kettle popcorn that's to die for. Oops! I shouldn't have used that term since kettle corn with all its sugar would be very bad for me.
DeleteOn Twitter I heard a few people complain about at least one actor who was full asian in the film but Eurasian in real life. Netflix did the reverse with their To All the Boys I've Loved Before film, as the leading actress is full-asian but her character is half. Then you have the movie Aloha, which thought Emma Stone passed for asian...never quite understood that one. They didn't even bother changing her character name either.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably thinking of Henry Golding who plays the heart throb boyfriend of Constance Woo. I believe he's half Malaysian and half English. He looks more English though. At least he's part Asian. Emma Stone? Well... what can I say?

ReplyDeleteI only go to movies at the theater once or twice a year. Their sound is way too loud. I wait until I can download movies to my TV on Amazon Prime. They are cheaper there too and I can control the sound.

ReplyDeleteIt was a fun movie and some people said that it wasn't over the top - that is how the rich are over there.
ReplyDeleteAnd then I got lectured by my Punahou friend about using the word "Oriental" to describe the people and myself and was told that we are "Asians", and "Oriental" is how to describe food.
Really? I grew up saying "Oriental" as my race type and calling food "Asian" when not being specific about it being Chinese, Japanese, etc. So, for the sake of keeping my aging local brain less twisted with politically correct new way of describing elements, I will continue to consider myself Oriental even if I keep getting an earful about my wrongness. It will drive her nuts. I told her it was a cultural difference between us - me being a graduate of public school, and her being from Punahou. I do think I have more fun since I don't follow as many self induced rules.
Oh, I am so relieved to read this as I have been confused about these terms and now I see I'm not alone. Being a haole I could really get good-naturedly taken to task for using the incorrect terminology. I was seriously confronted about the black vs African-American terms usage one time by a young woman who was African-American and didn't like the usage of black, but my black colleague used them just the opposite. It's all very confusing trying not to be derogatory as to offend anyone. ;-)

ReplyDeleteOur kids went atop the hotel featured in the movie, and had sent me a postcard of it the day the movie came out. Quite a coincidence!!!!
