Art and I were at the shopping center a couple of days ago when we both looked up into the bright Hawaiian sky and had the same memory flash across our brains.
We looked at each other and burst out laughing.
Several years ago, our daughter Tiffany was visiting us from Illinois. We were in my parents' tiny Ford Festiva. Tiffany was in the backseat. As we were parking the car, Tiffany suddenly shrieked and said there was a giant bug in the car.
"Of course not," we scoffed.
We all exited the car and Tiffany let out another screech. To our shock, we saw the biggest darn American cockroach we'd ever seen before.
To add to our shock, it scooted out the car, onto the roof and incredibly took flight. We had NO idea it could fly so high!
As we all stood gaping at this amazing sight...
... a mynah bird suddenly appeared out of nowhere and swooped down in midflight to snatch the roach feast before our very eyes! (OK...I'm sorry. I tried to photoshop what occurred but couldn't do the occasion justice.)
Whatever the case, we've never seen this happen again. I guess this is one of those experiences that you had to be there to appreciate its awesomeness. Have you had something like this happen to you?

But what about the shopping center and the sky triggered the memory for you both?
ReplyDeleteThe biggest one we saw was in a Shanghai hotel room. It was in a corner at the ceiling. I have no recollection how Dan got it out of there but likely a glass figured in its removal. Gives me the creeps thinking of it now. Our daughter who lived in China at the time had a separate room so I don't think we said anything to her about it.
That's really funny! Great photoshop!
ReplyDeleteI've had mice in the car -- more than once.
ReplyDeleteI have a roach story but it is not as good as this one. This is great,
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious!! I had no idea that cockroaches flew at all??? I am happy to report; I do not think I have ever seen one in person....thank goodness!!! HA! Annster's Domain
ReplyDeleteGreat story!!!
ReplyDeletegood attempt to photoshop-I got the idea...
ReplyDeleteOh yes they do fly and that bird was great fortune. I haven't seen one in 15 years since I left Florida and what a blessing.
ReplyDeleteOne poor bug.
ReplyDeleteA truly unique post! I looked them up and they can fly a little bit if they begin high up.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing!
ReplyDeleteThey fly in the South. And they're enormous. I hope to never see one again.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the photo shop attempt. It really helped to picture what you must have seen. Great story.
ReplyDeleteWhen we lived in Puerto Rico, we had enormous roaches, as long as a finger. My grandmother would catch them and talked to them. I have since learned they can be trained. Great photoshop, BTW. :-)
ReplyDeleteIn my lifetime I have met German, English and American cockroaches. Enough for me.
ReplyDeleteI guess it was just to entertain Tiffany!
ReplyDeleteWow! I didn't know they could fly either. I carried potato chips on the eastern Florida beach and had seagulls snatch them from our hands, so we tossed chips into the air. I prefer that over your flying cockroach adventure. Linda in Kansas
