My Almost New iPhone Died!

My son-in-law told me last October that it was a good idea to upgrade my iPhone 6s to an XR because our carrier, T-Mobile had a great iPhone upgrade plan.

I’ve been loving my new cell phone. However a month or so ago, my new XR just wouldn’t turn on. Totally dead. I looked online and it said I should quickly press the Up Volume button, then the Down Volume button and then the Power button on the side. It worked! But that was rather disconcerting. That never happened with my iPhone 4 or my iPhone 6s. What the heck!

I thought it was just a fluke. Nope.

A week ago, the same thing happened. This time, the iPhone stayed dead. Totally dead!

This was very upsetting. I called Apple Support and told them what happened. They made an appointment for me at the Genius Bar at Kahala Mall for the next day.

We went in with my dead phone. I'd been feeling really disconnected without my trusty cellphone.

My genius tech checked my phone and pronounced it truly dead and said it would need to be replaced.

So she asked me for my Apple ID so she could back up the information on my phone.

Ummmm.... Would you believe I didn't know it? I have it at home, but I didn't know it right off the bat. Sigh. I am probably one of those seniors that techies have to train to be patient with.

Once I got home I looked online and found this:
Follow these steps before you take your device to an Apple Store, Apple Authorized Service Provider, or carrier. If your device won't turn on or respond, finish as many steps as possible:
  1. Back up your iOS device.
  2. Have your Apple ID password ready. For some repairs, you'll need your Apple ID password to erase your device and turn off Find My iPhone.*
  3. Bring your sales receipt (if possible), in case your service requires proof of purchase.
  4. Bring your device and any accessories that you need help with.
  5. Bring a form of personal identification, like a driver’s license, passport, or other government-issued ID.
  6. If you haven't already, call to check whether you need an appointment before you go to a service location. For example, schedule a Genius Bar reservation before you go to an Apple Store.
Ah well... the genius techie did replace my phone, helped me get a new Apple ID, reloaded my iPhone with all my information and reminded me to write my Apple ID somewhere so I don't forget it.

Art thinks I probably got a refurbished iPhone which might explain why the battery seems to run out a little faster, but just a little.

The main thing is, it's all working again.

But for how long?

  2. That would be disconcerting. Going to the Apple store sounds like getting through security at the airport. And who remembers their passwords? They say not to do this, but I am seriously considering resetting all my passwords to just use the same one for everything. It's really getting ridiculous the number I have so I have to write them all down and how safe is that?

  3. I just recently changed my pwd for my phone and so now I do know it as it is something I use often for something else. So much security and steps means us elders are going to get farther and farther behind.

  5. That receipt thing is funny. I never get a receipt at the Apple store. They email the receipt. So, I guess I would have it as it's in my email. As for the dead phone, I don't think buying through a third party, in your case T-Mobile, is a good idea. I like to deal directly with Apple. Those geniuses are the best. As for the Apple ID, I have to use it often to get into iCloud and iTunes, and all my iPhone stuff is backed up to iCloud.

  7. Now that is a bummer. Somehow I don't think we should have to do all that with a new phone. Kind of glad my flip phone behaves. Not smart at all but sturdy.

  10. I got a new Samsung Android because I liked the old one. The routine is the same,. You need all sorts of password, numbers, id, yada yada, before anything can happen. My tech guru (know as son David) warned me. Still it took 2 trips to get it all going. At least it didn't die on me, but my sister's new iPhone died dead the first month. EEK!

  13. Passwords are such a pain. We have so many of them, and every once in a while we are urged to change passwords. We have a little password notebook - at home- and I keep some passwords in the 'Notes" on my iPhone. But that wouldn't help is the phone is dead :-/
I hope your new phone is long lasting.
