A while back, another blogger friend wrote a post about commenting styles. I linked that post to this one, but then she thought about it and decided to remove it. My blogger friend had said that she'd read a post from yet another blogger about different commenting styles.
One type of commenter was the "encourager". I have to say I agree that it's always wonderful to have encouraging comments because let's face it, it feels good. I know we all love being cheered on.
Another type of commenter that person mentioned was someone who always brought the post back to their own situation and made it all about them and their own experiences.
Ummmm.... I guess I want to say something about this.
#1: Like my blogger friend, I love ALL comments... any comments, so long as it's kind and not spam. I think we're all getting hit by those annoying spam.
But I really like it when someone will take my post and relate it to their experiences because I can then feel a connection to that person and gain a bit more understanding. It makes the commenter more real to me.
Yes, it's fabulous to hear a "good job." However, I like it even better if it makes someone remember something that happened in their life and is willing to share it with me.
Do you have a preference?
By the way... I also really love advice!

good Morning Kay, I think maybe it’s my post you are referring too? ISorry that post was removed by accident when I was transferring over to a new program, a few posts were lost, I love all comments that come from a positive place, I did actually get two comments on that post that were very negative and I can only surmise from their acid response that it touched a nerve, our words carry so much power , we need to choose words carefully. I also love people to share their stories, I think blogging is first and foremost a place to share, always., also respect and acknowledge the time and work put in the blogs we respond too, I’ve learned so much from my blog friends and enjoy all the blogs I follow!

DeleteFrom someone who gets comments on a post that can usually be counted on one hand, I'm grateful for any time of comments except spam. But really I never have considered or categorized my comments. Interesting to consider now.

DeleteI enjoy conversations, and the 2nd kind of comment does that. To engage my readers makes me feel as if I really have friends! Often, I don't feel writers need encouragement, my life revolves around my home. I don't like travel. I find it difficult, with my mental health issues to be in groups. I have low tolerance.
ReplyDeleteSOmetimes, the odd time, I'll advise someone that they are violating copyright issues and that'll get me shunned. As a teacher, you know this, you want people to understand societal norms. There are, as you know, excellent protocols about posting children's photos. That got me banned. Yet, I had students whose mother's were afraid of abusive fathers, and didn't want their faces known.
Then, there is @Troutbirder, who bragged about drowning 47 cats in a comment on one of my posts. I just shake my head. I never visit him anymore. I guess it goes both ways.

DeleteI love any comment as long as it is not nasty or negative. Advice is great and encouragement is great however if someone is commenting just to be nasty/mean...keep it to yourself! It will be deleted from my blog. I love the saying "if you don;t have something nice to say; don;t say anything at all"...words to live by!

DeleteI agree, Annsterw. I have very few commenters on my blog because my blog is mostly a journal. If I get spam, I delete it immediately. I welcome any comments except spam. I read several blogs myself and I often comment,,,being the opinionated person I am.

DeleteI think I can accept all comments, although those that provide critical advice do irritate me just a bit. I try to be fair and honest, though.

DeleteI always like to hear how other people's experiences relate to the topic of a blog post. Makes it interesting. But I don't mind if someone criticizes my point of view, or disagrees with me . . . as long as it's not spam.

DeleteI too love it when commenters leave their own anecdotes. Like you said, it helps to get to know them better plus just "yes" responses while nice, are not revealing. Sometimes I get some really great advice which I usually try.

DeleteI find it hard not to start blabbing about something similar I've experienced, when I read your blog. But, then, you have such UNIQUE day-to-day adventures, along with your Mom, that your blog is fun to read in order to get out of my little prairie existence in Kansas.

DeleteI don't have that many comments or as many readers as you so I always get thrilled when I get positive comments and/or personal comments. Blogging frees me up to "speak" with confidence because many times when I am in social situations and start talking, I get interrupted or bore others so they move away and I feel deflated. I also love the blog friends that you have and check out their blogs because they are so interesting!

DeleteI often wonder about my comments. Do they make sense with all the typos? Am I on the topic. I can see myself in both types you mention but I think there are other types.
ReplyDeleteOf course you always make sense, Red. And everything you say is wonderful. We're both teachers so I think we're almost always of the same mind. I don't even care if any of my blogger friends are on topic or not just so we're communicating.
DeleteI have been following and commenting on your blog since forever, Kay. I recognize several of your commenters here, ones that I follow. I am not fond of two- or three-word comments, which just seem to be a way to say "I was here." I do try to make sure my comments are sincere and not too awfully long. Sometimes I tell stories about myself, but that's what I figure my blog is for. :-)

ReplyDeleteAbout a decade ago, my daughter bought me a CD with tons of clip art that I was free to alter and use. It's been fabulous for my blog. I use it quite often.
DeleteWhew. I'm relieved. I was afraid "making it all about me" was going to be a bad thing. But I often do respond with some personal connection to another's post. I try to highlight something the blogger said also, and I TRY to say something that hasn't already been said. but right now I am trying to catch up, so I am not even reading the previous comments.
