A while back, another blogger friend wrote a post about commenting styles. I linked that post to this one, but then she thought about it and decided to remove it. My blogger friend had said that she'd read a post from yet another blogger about different commenting styles.
One type of commenter was the "encourager". I have to say I agree that it's always wonderful to have encouraging comments because let's face it, it feels good. I know we all love being cheered on.
Another type of commenter that person mentioned was someone who always brought the post back to their own situation and made it all about them and their own experiences.
Ummmm.... I guess I want to say something about this.
#1: Like my blogger friend, I love ALL comments... any comments, so long as it's kind and not spam. I think we're all getting hit by those annoying spam.
But I really like it when someone will take my post and relate it to their experiences because I can then feel a connection to that person and gain a bit more understanding. It makes the commenter more real to me.
Yes, it's fabulous to hear a "good job." However, I like it even better if it makes someone remember something that happened in their life and is willing to share it with me.
Do you have a preference?
By the way... I also really love advice!

good Morning Kay, I think maybe it’s my post you are referring too? ISorry that post was removed by accident when I was transferring over to a new program, a few posts were lost, I love all comments that come from a positive place, I did actually get two comments on that post that were very negative and I can only surmise from their acid response that it touched a nerve, our words carry so much power , we need to choose words carefully. I also love people to share their stories, I think blogging is first and foremost a place to share, always., also respect and acknowledge the time and work put in the blogs we respond too, I’ve learned so much from my blog friends and enjoy all the blogs I follow!
ReplyDeleteOooohhh... I thought you deleted your post on purpose, Laurie. It really made me think.
DeleteFrom someone who gets comments on a post that can usually be counted on one hand, I'm grateful for any time of comments except spam. But really I never have considered or categorized my comments. Interesting to consider now.
ReplyDeleteoops! "time" should be "kind".
DeleteThat spam is making me crazy! I love seeing your posts since my son lives in your state.
DeleteI enjoy conversations, and the 2nd kind of comment does that. To engage my readers makes me feel as if I really have friends! Often, I don't feel writers need encouragement, my life revolves around my home. I don't like travel. I find it difficult, with my mental health issues to be in groups. I have low tolerance.
ReplyDeleteSOmetimes, the odd time, I'll advise someone that they are violating copyright issues and that'll get me shunned. As a teacher, you know this, you want people to understand societal norms. There are, as you know, excellent protocols about posting children's photos. That got me banned. Yet, I had students whose mother's were afraid of abusive fathers, and didn't want their faces known.
Then, there is @Troutbirder, who bragged about drowning 47 cats in a comment on one of my posts. I just shake my head. I never visit him anymore. I guess it goes both ways.
What? 47 cats? Good gosh!
DeleteI love any comment as long as it is not nasty or negative. Advice is great and encouragement is great however if someone is commenting just to be nasty/mean...keep it to yourself! It will be deleted from my blog. I love the saying "if you don;t have something nice to say; don;t say anything at all"...words to live by!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree that comments should always stay cordial. You can disagree, but do it kindly and respectfully.
DeleteI agree, Annsterw. I have very few commenters on my blog because my blog is mostly a journal. If I get spam, I delete it immediately. I welcome any comments except spam. I read several blogs myself and I often comment,,,being the opinionated person I am.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love your opinions, Margie.
DeleteNo comment. lol
ReplyDeleteYou are so funny!
DeleteI think I can accept all comments, although those that provide critical advice do irritate me just a bit. I try to be fair and honest, though.
ReplyDeleteFair and honest is great. I've always loved your comments, Tabor.
DeleteI always like to hear how other people's experiences relate to the topic of a blog post. Makes it interesting. But I don't mind if someone criticizes my point of view, or disagrees with me . . . as long as it's not spam.
ReplyDeleteNo kidding! And I always love hearing from you, Tom.
DeleteI too love it when commenters leave their own anecdotes. Like you said, it helps to get to know them better plus just "yes" responses while nice, are not revealing. Sometimes I get some really great advice which I usually try.
ReplyDeleteFrom your blog posts and comments, Patti, I feel like I really know you and that we've been friends forever.
DeleteI find it hard not to start blabbing about something similar I've experienced, when I read your blog. But, then, you have such UNIQUE day-to-day adventures, along with your Mom, that your blog is fun to read in order to get out of my little prairie existence in Kansas.
ReplyDeleteI do wish the evil entries could be blocked, like blocking a phone number on our cell phones.
It's nice to see other's perspective on the topics, especially those younger than I. And, those a tad older than I, certainly are inspiring too!
Linda in Kansas
I always look forward to your "blabbing" Linda. In fact, I had a friend who recently told me she looks for your comment whenever she opens my blog post; especially health advice.
DeleteI'm afraid I am one of those who relates your sentences to my experiences...and I am embarrassed by it. Then again, I write notes off the top of my head.
ReplyDeleteI love when you relate your experiences, Mage!
DeleteWill bear in mind the comments you like! I saw that post you spoke of and deemed myself and 'encourager'
ReplyDeleteAll your comments are wonderful, Christine. Please say hello to your wonderful family for me.
DeleteI don't have that many comments or as many readers as you so I always get thrilled when I get positive comments and/or personal comments. Blogging frees me up to "speak" with confidence because many times when I am in social situations and start talking, I get interrupted or bore others so they move away and I feel deflated. I also love the blog friends that you have and check out their blogs because they are so interesting!
ReplyDeleteI really do have the BEST blog friends and I hope everybody will check out my sidebar. We are a cyber family. I can't imagine anybody being bored with what you say, Aunty. You know so much and get around everywhere. I really admire your independence.
DeleteHmm.... I wonder what you think of someone who tells you that you have a fabulous photo and tells you to put it on the side of your blog? I wonder what kind of bossy boots would do that? Oh, wait, that would be ME! :-O
ReplyDeleteWell that's what I call constructive advice, Kay, especially since we share a name and so many opinions.
DeleteThanks, Kay! You are just so sweet. We are alike but I suspect you are sweeter than I am! My comments tend to be a little... overenthusiastic sometimes, but hey, that's what I am like!
DeleteAnd that's what I like about you, Kay.
DeleteI love to hear what others are doing or how they handle a situation. That's why I enjoy reading blogs that talk about what the writer is doing and how they are handling things. Makes me see different view points.
ReplyDeleteI do absolutely agree with you!!!
DeleteOh, thank you Kay. Sometimes I think I relate too much to posts. Thank you for being so inclusive.
ReplyDeleteYou never relate too much, Joanne. Thank you for being such a wonderful blogger friend.
DeleteI often wonder about my comments. Do they make sense with all the typos? Am I on the topic. I can see myself in both types you mention but I think there are other types.
ReplyDeleteOf course you always make sense, Red. And everything you say is wonderful. We're both teachers so I think we're almost always of the same mind. I don't even care if any of my blogger friends are on topic or not just so we're communicating.
DeleteI have been following and commenting on your blog since forever, Kay. I recognize several of your commenters here, ones that I follow. I am not fond of two- or three-word comments, which just seem to be a way to say "I was here." I do try to make sure my comments are sincere and not too awfully long. Sometimes I tell stories about myself, but that's what I figure my blog is for. :-)
ReplyDeleteAlways feel free to write as long a comment as you have time for, DJan. I love everything you write. Having met you in person, I can let everybody know you are as wonderful and amazing as you appear on your blog. I wish you lived next door.
DeleteI often have little time to write a big comment, but the bigger the comment from me, typically the more I'm interested.
ReplyDeleteThough I typically think you write better than 95% of the people I follow.
Some I have to think what to say.
Well, gee whiz, Adam. You have just made my day. What a truly kind and sweet thing to say. Thank you very, very much. I do learn so much from you. You have the most fun and interesting facts on your blog.
DeleteI never read any comments on my comments, in fact after so many years of blogging, I'm down to about 1 post a week. Of course, i have several blogs-fun to get to know you better during the past almost 12 years.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed watching your wonderful grandchildren grow these past 11 years, Lin.
DeleteWhat I am wondering about is where you found that clip art image that looks so much like you.
ReplyDeleteAbout a decade ago, my daughter bought me a CD with tons of clip art that I was free to alter and use. It's been fabulous for my blog. I use it quite often.
DeleteWhew. I'm relieved. I was afraid "making it all about me" was going to be a bad thing. But I often do respond with some personal connection to another's post. I try to highlight something the blogger said also, and I TRY to say something that hasn't already been said. but right now I am trying to catch up, so I am not even reading the previous comments.
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to your comments, Linda!
