Cans for Charity?

Readers of my blog know that Art walks/jogs almost every morning of the week. During his walks, he had been keeping a look-out for money that people have dropped so he could add it to his charity jar. I guess this adds more excitement to his walks.

I'm afraid we must live in a poorer area because he only finds pennies and sometimes nickels. We have friends in another neighborhood who find bills and larger denominations of coins. Ah well...

Therefore, Art has decided to collect drink cans that people have left on the sidewalks and roadways because they were too lazy to dispose of them properly. There is a 5 cent recycle return for each aluminum can turned in to the city.

Art has been coming home now with quite a few cans and will add the money he gets for the cans into his charity jar. He says he can now fill his jar a lot faster. He figures his charity is also helping our environment.

It's fun to see what keeps my energetic husband happy and motivated.

  1. Good for Art --exercise, litter control, and charity make an impressive trifecta.

  2. This is great. My friend collects beer and alcohol containers but she keeps the deposits!

  3. Such a great idea to recycle the found cans! I usually find change and rarely anything more than a dollar- it all goes into our alms jar!

  4. I must live in an even poorer neighborhood since the only thing I ever see on the ground is a penny (and, yes, I do pick it up!). Anyway, good for Art!

  6. You really have a special guy in Art. The 5 cent recycle return is a great idea.

  7. Good for Art. I pick up cans and bottles occasionally and shake my head in disbelief at the inconsiderate people who can't be bothered to put them in a trash can, even when it's a few feet away. :-(

  8. I don't think we have 5 cent can return here. Folks smash cans and take them for recycling by the pound. Even the aluminum frames from old windows are recycled when an installer puts in fancier windows. Happy clean jogging for Art! Linda in Kansas

  12. Oh Kay, you made me laugh with that "poorer neighborhood" logic! Well, the more I read about Art, the more I like him. :)

  13. My mother picked up cans back in the beginning days of aluminum collection. She didn't have a charity jar, though, unless it was ice cream cones for her grands.

  15. Good for Art. There is no money to be made in recycling cans or anything else here anymore. It all goes into the recycle bins, or, if you don't care, as too many folks don't, it goes in the trash, or on the ground.

  16. good hobby. My hubby used to bring home golf balls when his walk near our golf course. He has about 200 and tries to give them away to anyone who wants them and will cart them away...

  17. So 20 million cans would equate to 1 million dollars, but even if he collected 1000 tins every day it would still take 60 years to get the million dollars, although 100,000 dollars would only take 6 years ! ! !.
