I was reading online that there had been instances of racism against Asian Americans because Trump had called the COVID-19/Corona Virus the Chinese Virus. (Most Americans, I believe can't tell the difference between the different Asian populations.) Well... I figured it was just another one of his careless tweets.
Then Art showed me this article from NBC news. Here's the link.

It's frightening to think that instead of calling it either the Corona Virus or COVID-19, he deliberately chose to change it to the Chinese Virus. Why? I'm thinking he was trying to divert attention from his mishandling of this crisis. Whatever the case, he is once again thoughtlessly causing more racism in this country.
It's sad.

you are absolutely right kay. he wants to distract from his atrocious handling of this catastrophe. and he does it at the cost of every single asian person that will suffer from prejudice because of his crudeness. i truly hate this man. he is pure evil.

ReplyDeleteHe was asked point blank about his not calling it the corona virus. He of course firmly stated that he was correct with his label. But then he also tried to blame the handling of it on Obama. Scary who leads our country.

My husband thought he was retaliating against the Chinese when they said the Americans brought the virus to Wuhan. Which also doesn't make sense.

Trump said what he said, I had to listen to it on two tv channels and turned the tv off for 2 days, oh, my goodness sakes alive..This is mary from Washington state, since Washington has many deaths and many infected people with the virus we are staying inside and safe..I have a medical condition and don't want to become infected as I am over 71 now and my hubs nearly 73..I just cannot get over how this man became the president at all, he surely is cruel in his speech and his actions..I simply cannot listen to anything he states at all, so we only listen to public radio on the radio and many call and visit by phone or on our computer..I wanted to e-mail you earlier than now but I have been pretty ill with my own medical stuff, but I read you daily and this is my shout out to you and your wonderful art and lovely family, peace, joy and love always and may God Bless you continually..keep smiling and pay NO MIND TO IGNORANT YAHOOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DeleteIt is sad. However, one of my friends who hates Trump so much that she can't see anything other than disgust for him has also referred to it as a Chinese virus. Perhaps we need a breather from this. Maybe a total shut down of the US just the way China did when the disease was escalating. Close the stock markets so the fear and volatility is hampered, at least for that sector.

He is what my dad would have called “a piece of work”. I wonder, though, why we are surprised that he has once again shown his innate racism. Some of us feel really badly when we hear it, a few speak up, but apparently no one is going to do anything about it.

DeleteI have listened to/watched a bit of his "Daily Briefings" from the White House. Trump is despicable as he holds court, belittles the media, contradicts the scientists and doctors, and laps up the limelight. Since he can't have campaign rallies, this is his way of staying in the spotlight. Those he surrounds himself with pay him careful deference, consistently saying "the President said, as the President has announced, as the President has instructed us". It'sickening. He continues togive faulty information that his experts have to carefully correct. Today he behaved very badly to an NBC journalist who asked a question he didn't like. His "Chinese virus" phrasing has been discredited, but he doesn't care. His base likes it.

ReplyDeleteYes, Kay, you're correct: I wouldn't be able to tell the "difference" between the different Asian cultures. Heck, I've seen some folks I thought were hispanic, and turns out they have Asian ancestry. A photo chart would be interesting to educate us. But, then again, DJT would use it to put those folks at further risk.

I used to have hyacinths along the side of my house and loved to see those early bloomers in spring. Please stay safe, Linda. I made a cloth mask yesterday, but then read a study from Vietnam that said they weren’t helpful. Then I saw a news report tonight that showed how nurses in Texas who didn’t have enough N95 masks are prolonging the life of their masks by making cloth covers for them. Hmmmm... I have a few left over N95 masks from the year of the bird flu so if I use the cloth cover for it.... maybe?
DeleteN95 masks were meant to be used for one day when I worked at hospitals in the isolation patient rooms. Supposedly, with our own breath and moisture, they don't work as well after one day. Staff even have to be "fit tested" to make sure we choose the correct size of N95 mask. I doubt the cloth cover for the N95 works to help it be effective longer. I suppose a cloth mask is better than nothing, but this virus is evil.
DeleteYour old supply of N95 masks are valuable. I only have 3 from my previous jobs, and pray I don't need them. My private duty 24/7 patient is easily infected with respiratory illnesses due to his tracheostomy (that hole in the front of your neck with a tube device in it to breathe.) Our core staff of 6 nurses hope he doesn't get it, nor any of us.
It's so sad that there aren't enough for all healthcare folks.
(Yep, I've worn those full helmets, sealed with the battery pack on the side and tubing pushing filtered air into the helmet/mask.) Read your CDC guidelines and save those masks; and pray that you won't need them. Hugz, Linda in Kansas

It probably took this pandemic for many to realize what a mess he and all his minions have made of our government. I too have no idea who was interviewed and called his handling of this crisis good.

ReplyDeleteI think far from being a thoughtless act by this President that it’s very deliberate. This follows the pattern of intentionally inciting actions that create the very unacceptable discriminatory behaviors in some others he fostered throughout his campaigning and as President.
