My 90 year old mother has a difficult time hearing people on the phone. I realized then that using the speakerphone option would be really helpful for her. She doesn't need hearing aids, but probably is a little hard of hearing. The volume control on the phone does not go high enough for her.
AND... when I'm having to call in prescriptions and need to use the keypad to punch in the prescription numbers, having that speakerphone is really helpful.
It's just one more way technology has made our lives easier.
I agree, the technology is great but I have the exact same (landline) phone & my friend Danielle likes to tease me for having a phone from the dinosaur times!
ReplyDeleteWe keep the landline especially for my mother and also in case of a hurricane and the cell towers fall.
DeleteWe use speaker phone when we both want to hear the person on the other end. Using two phones to listen is hard because when either one of us speaks its too loud for the other. Speaker phone is the better solution. My daughter uses it when she puts the granddaughters on so she can hear the conversation too.

ReplyDeleteIt's nice when you are on a long hold to be able to go about your normal activities while listening for the end of the music/ your-call-is-important meassages.

ReplyDeleteI wear my hearing aids all of the time except when I'm out walking for exercise, when I often listen to music. I have trouble hearing on the phone, too, so I always use the speaker phone now. I also often ask receptionists to speak more directly into their mouth piece. I really am getting tired of phone professionals who answer at a rapidly rattled off response or mumble.
ReplyDeleteMy hearing is OK for now and it really irritates me when people leave behind messages with phone numbers they rattle off too quickly and slightly mumbled.
DeleteWe now exclusively use our cell phones, which are too small to cradle between my ear and shoulder. If I have to write anything down I turn on the speaker feature and set the phone on the desk.

ReplyDeleteDid you know if a caller left a message on your CELL phone, that you can read a transcription of the message? Sometimes they still talked too fast or mumbled for that feature.
I wear two hearing aids. I don't hear better listening to a speaker phone; it just sounds like an illiterate parrot. I also don't understand what's being said when the caller is using a speaker phone to talk to me.
Hope your plan helps your Mom a lot. Landline phones even have the ability to permit phones with texted, large type print to appear. Might want to have the audiologist that worked with Art, check out your Mom's hearing. Mom probably doesn't want to mess with getting used to hearing aids, but the audiologist could probably connect her to the text phone. Might be covered by Medicare.

Yes, I did know that about messages on my cellphone which is helpful. And yes, the speakerphone option does help mom. She doesn't really need a hearing aid... yet. The extra volume of the speakerphone option is enough for her. She only uses the phone for if my brother or I call her or if she calls her sister. Otherwise, she won't pick up at all because she's afraid the person will speak in English to her and she'll freeze. Actually, her English has deteriorated now that she watches so much TV Japan. She's having a hard time understanding Art and he somehow has not learned Japanese in the 12 years we've lived with her. Sigh... On the other hand, when my brother who also won't/can't speak Japanese speaks to her, she somehow understands him. And me, I have to speak to her in Japanese to make sure she understands.
DeleteOh WOW! Amazing how a person reverts to their original language. I remember how stunned I was to see your Mom's delicate Japanese writing. I'm thinking a video of your Mom, (and you?) speaking Japanese would be something wonderful your kids and grandkids. They would love to have and enjoy that recording some day: now and in the future.

I use speakerphone when I don't want to listen to prerecorded music as I wait on line. It's a good option. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great tip, Kay. I don't use the speaker feature myself. Jace loves it and he uses it a lot. My mom doesn't hear well. I have to use FaceTime for her to have a decent convo with anybody, that works pretty good with her for that. Thanks for the great tip.
