Masks for My Grandkids

I first started madly making masks in March. Madly! But I didn't have as many supplies as I needed. I scrounged everywhere including mom's sewing chest for elastic. I didn't have enough thread at first, but combined with mom's eventually had quite a bit until I found that many were polyester which would melt if someone tried to iron their mask. Friends gave me their cotton aloha shirts or 100% cotton bed sheets to cut up. My daughter sent me some of her cotton fabrics. I was at my sewing machine daily morning to night for a couple of months and ended up sewing about 200 masks.

And then I was done.

But I had the last remnants left and asked my son if my grandsons could use more masks.

He said, "Sure, they could always use extra masks."

So I made these.

After making so many masks, I've learned little tricks to make it go faster like not cutting the threads between masks.

My daughter also sent me these "wonder clips" to use instead of pins.

I also made some ladybug masks for them.

Our son said the 3D style instead of Olson was better for the boys because they're easier to breathe.

Unfortunately I made them a bit big. (Will they grow into them?)

Darn!

I kind of thought I was done with masks, but then my friend, Terry gave me more pretty fabric.

And somehow it made me want to get even more fabric. So we ventured out to Fabric Mart. Have I lost my mind? I don't need more fabric. I don't need to make more masks. Everybody can get masks pretty cheaply now. But the fabrics were so cute.

Oh what the heck! I think my neighbors could use more masks for the holidays. And now I have some cute fabrics for my granddaughter and grandsons.

And then there's all these supplies that my daughter sent me.

Ah well...

Have I gotten addicted to revising patterns and making masks?

Could be...

  1. My wife and I will receive our vaccine next month. Masks for us will be a thing of the past. We all must get immunized. We need at least 75% of the country to end the Pandemic. Get your shots!

    1. You will still need masks for a long time. First, your immunization has to build up. Second, they don't know how long the immunity will last. Third, you could still be a virus spreader.

  2. At 85, I intend to take the shot as soon as they offer it to me.

  4. I love the ladybug masks, very sweet what you're doing Kay--over 200 masks, wow! But I did laugh when I saw the Fabric Mart photo, you're a owman on a mission that's for sure! Well, even with that vaccine on the horizon I think it's going to be 3-4 months easy before we stop wearing these face wraps so yes I say keep doing what you do so well :)

  5. I heard Fauci say that even after the vaccinations we will need to wear masks for quite a while even with 90% effectiveness. That 10% can still infect others. I say keep making them.

  6. I enjoy my Kay masks very much and they have held up quite well. I do think we will be wearing them for a long time to come, so you can never have too many, in my opinion. :-)

  8. I have a hard time finding masks that fit. Evidently my big head translates to a big mouth chin area. I have two masks that I rotate among and wash frequently. My youngest daughter however keeps being given masks all the time. She probably has 40 of them now and choose which mask to wear that day by matching it to her outfit. I get kind of jealous at times.

  9. Very cute masks. I didn't even realize the different style names. I'm sure we'll be using masks much longer than anyone thinks even with the vaccine. I for one have been wearing them out during flu season for years now cuz of COPD. Plus we don't have enough vaccine yet for everyone and then there are the no-vaxers. At 79 I'm not taking chances. i just ordered some Christmas cloth masks for my kids and grandkids. They'll get them this weekend.

  11. I wish I lived closer because I would love to have more masks. I have the boring blue ones and a few cute cloth ones. Keeping them washed can be a challenge; luckily, I don't go many places. I still intend to wear masks even once I get the vaccine. I don't trust the Covidiots.

  12. You are so funny. Yes, stunningly beautiful fabrics there. No, no more masks for a while. I mended the big quilt yesterday, and today I will drag out the crow quilt. :)

  15. Good for you. I just couldn't get into making masks after I made a few, and I found the ones I made didn't fit my very well. We don't go away from home much, and we have a supply of disposables.

  18. Hello! Greetings from Jakarta 🙋‍♀️
You sew 200 masks by yourself?! Uwaaaw!! 👍👍👍
Actually, if this pandemics end, I will still using a mask if I use public transportation. The pollution is no joke! 😫 After I end up 10 months working from home, I never get cough or flu. While in the past, I easily get cough or flu. So I conclude that stay in home is better than go outside hahaha 🤣🤣🤣 So I will keep using mask if go outside, especially when using public transportation.

That picture of all those different coloured materials in the showroom looks like a fabric oriented version of the film set of "Charlie and the Chocolate factory", i wonder if they`re edible and all different flavours ! ?.
