Didn't they use to wait until after Thanksgiving to put up Christmas decorations?
We were at Sam's Club a week or two ago and saw this. I have to smile when I see snowman displays around Hawaii since the only place you see snow in Hawaii is on the Big Island's Mauna Kea.
But sheesh.....
Christmas?
It wasn't even really close to Halloween yet, not to mention Thanksgiving (unless you're Canadian, that is).
They are warning us that because of the slowdown in mail delivery and/or supply of gift items, people in Hawaii need to start shopping and mailing now.
But gosh... I can't even think about the holidays yet. We're still not comfortable holding a big get together at our house for Thanksgiving and don't love the idea of going shopping. It's probably going to be gift cards and Amazon.
If anything... I'm thinking of next year's holidays. Or is that too soon?
I hope by next year they will have the pandemic under control. Everyone is so sick of it.

ReplyDeleteI worked in retail for several years, so I have come to expect to see stuff like this happening. Yet even I get annoyed by it all.

Retail Christmas creep has been happening for years-especially in the decorations area.

ReplyDeleteI posted Santa's photo from Home Depot not too long ago. It really startled me to see it already. I've been thinking of Christmas gifts already and have very few ideas. I think I went overboard last year on granddaughters because of Covid and need to scale it back some.
ReplyDeleteWe won't be having an indoor celebration of Thanksgiving or Christmas. Thanksgiving we will probably zoom.
ReplyDeleteMy son may be coming home on leave this year for Christmas,so I definitely want to visit with him,but even though he is vaccinated,we will wear masks in the house to visit because he travels so much and I am concerned about breakthrough infections.I have to be very careful because I have some health issues that would probably make even a breakthrough case very dangerous for me. Our little granddaughter's first Christmas and we dare not even hold and hug her because she is exposed to several other children in day care. She has been a ray of sunshine during these Covid times,she's almost 9months old and has a big smile and two little shiny white teeth now and smiles so big,so often. I swear when my husband and I talked to her on the phone the other day she called him Gah-pop after she said Hi!. Covid has become very difficult to bear when it comes to distancing from loved ones.
I don't do anything with Christmas until after Thanksgiving but the stores keep moving it closer and closer to summer. I intend to have a very low key Xmas like last year. I'm not a fan of the gift giving to start with. As long as I can get the ingredients to make my cookies, I'll be fine. :)
ReplyDeleteKind of wonder when they will start pushing Christmas along with fire crackers around the 4th. Even before Covid and supply chain problems, the date was moving up. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteIt's everywhere. The Halloween candy in Safeway is surrounded by Christmas stuff. I read somewhere that Iceland has a Christmas traditon of giving books called "Jolabokaflod" translated roughly as 'Christmas book flood.' Then they spend Christmas Eve reading. I like it. So everyone on my list is getting books. Not sure what else will going on with my family. Except for the grandkids gift giving is kind of a meh with us. Most of us don't want anymore stuff just company, sigh, maybe in 2022.

ReplyDeleteIt really is hard to believe that they are already starting with the Christmas stuff. And I am still unwilling to travel anywhere that requires a plane ride. :-(

ReplyDeleteIn my life I prefer 1 holiday at a time. The exception is that I make more than half of the few gifts I give at Christmas).
I start avoiding all shopping except groceries around this time of year. I am not a big consumer and don't like all the hoopla Christmas has turned into. I just want to celebrate it as a religious holiday with my immediate family.

ReplyDeleteBen Franklin started stocking Christmas items about a month ago and now they have even more Christmas things. Ross Stores have also begun to stock up for Christmas. It feels like we have been starved for years and it now have a feast. Very dangerous for me because I really need to learn to control my spending habits.

ReplyDeleteI went to buy some of my regular stuff at this small grocery store and noticed everything is $2-3 higher now. I commented to the clerk and he told me shipping is really slow and prices have gone up. I read earlier this month that ships were waiting to be unloaded at major ports because of lack of manpower due to COVID. It said ships were just anchored at sea waiting and waiting.The article, and the clerk confirmed, to do all the holiday shopping now because of delays and lack of goods. I guess a small store feels the immediate repercussions vs.a big box store. I was just stunned.

DeleteI have told my daughter to get wish lists from her kids by early November this year if they want anything specific. I'm getting to the point with older grands that I might just want to give cash. But I do like giving gifts that are prettily wrapped and they can be excited over. In store shopping will be limited though. I usually do most of my shopping on line now a days.
ReplyDeletePerhaps this Christmas we should all concentrate on family, friends, Good deeds, and simple gifts. That way we give the shipping system, the manufacturers and everyone else a chance to get back on their feet. A good deed in itself and very suited to the season of Love don't you think?

Same here in California. Christmas merchandise is already up in stores, and we've not yet had Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I was a child, one of the big thrills was going to town the day after Thanksgiving because the stores put up their holiday decorations. I remember what a surprise it was the first time that I saw decorations before Thanksgiving. Now it seems like Halloween, Thanksgiving, AND Christmas get set up at the same time. It feels less...I don't know...breath taking?
