Library Fun!

We've been going to the library every week since I started FaceTime sessions with my six and four year old grandsons in Maryland. I'm getting lots of book suggestions from other teacher friends here in Hawaii and Illinois.

I would look up the library website, put in my library card # and then proceed to put books on Hold, Renew or whatever.

I had forgotten that a long while ago I'd downloaded the Hawaii Library app on my iPhone.

When I clicked on the app the other day, I saw I was already signed in and could go to the HOLDS and see what books were already waiting for me at the library and what books were in transit.

Gosh! It made my life so much easier.

When I went to pick up books the last time I was there and happened to have 17 childrens books in my arms, I asked what the limit was. The librarian smiled and said there is no limit on books. He also suggested other sources. Since I read 8 books to the boys in one FaceTime session the last time I met with them, the books are returned to the library quite quickly.

I love it! If you know any books you think I should read to them, please let me know. Just know that I must have read all the Mercer Mayer and Leo Lionni books that I knew they would like. JD has also read all the Dragon Masters and Hilo books. But then there's Julia Donaldson, Stuart Murphy, Chris Gall, Ryan T. Higgins, etc. 😄

  2. What about Clifford the Big Red Dog series; or the Berenstein Bears series? I had 8 boxes of kid books I sent to my nieces for their kids. Linda in Kansas

    1. You know... I haven't read the Clifford books to them. They must have all the Berenstein Bears. Our daughter-in-law was an investigative reporter and very big into books.

  3. When the local library catalog went online it was a bonus for Mom and me. She would read about a new book and ask me to see if it was available. Being able to put books on hold and get an email / check the account made for easy pickups. The hold books are shelved in the same area as NEW books/DVDs making it easy to scan shelves for new items. They also have a special label for some copies of new books. You can check them out for 1 week with no renewals. That keeps a few copies of the newest/more popular books in a quicker rotation.

The catalog software has been updated so its more graphical with pictures, less content on a page. Slower to load. I can play with it on my phone, but primarily use the computer.

Its a big change from the card catalogs that I used as a child(Author,Title,Subject). Computer searches are very handy and definitely easier to update, but I do miss those old card searches. Sometimes I would spot an interesting title/subject that you won't stumble across in the digital addition.

Going to the library was one of my get-out-of-the-house things to do the past few years, even before Covid. I'm glad that your grandson's enjoy story time. Sounds like a wonderful way to connect since travel has not been possible or practical.

  10. Well done! What a great project. I often reserve books, they pluck them off the shelves and I get a text that they are ready!
Your grandsons must love this! We saw our grandies this week, it's been awhile.

  14. Technology has changed so much that we do. I strongly believe in reading to kids. of course, you being a primary teacher know the value of reading than other teachers.

  15. Since you mention Hilo, JD might like Ben Hatke's Zita the Spacegirl series of graphic novels. Dan Santat and Heena Baek are also great author/illustrators.

I like to read the reviews of children's books at https://afuse8production.slj.com/. Hawaii's library system has many of the books she reviews, but it make take a while for a new book to get into the library system. If it's a popular new book, there may also be a wait to get the book. If a particular library has the book (eg Aiea but not Pearl City) and you are ranked low on the waitlist, you can select to pick up the book at the book's "home" location (eg Aiea) and this will give you priority to get the book before patrons who are requesting the book be held at another library location (eg Pearl City, Kahului).

  16. There is one children's book that I will never forget. It is not a famous book except perhaps to one certain group of first graders that I read it to on the day that my principal observed me on my first formal observation after returning to a certified a teaching job as a reading specialist at the end of my career after 25 years working as a paraeducator in remedial reading. The book is The Big Orange Splot, and it was one of the featured books in the Success For All reading program. I was nervous, but I was good, I put my heart into that reading and the kids loved it. When I finished it they spontaneously cheered - the book, not me - but the principal and I had tears streaming down our faces and she got up and hugged me. I passed.
If you don't already know the book, see if you can find it.

  19. That's wonderful! My DIL so enjoys reading and does so regularly, as does my son, to my grandson so he gets lots of books. She has regularly entertained children's groups reading books in libraries where she lives.
