I had to go to Tripler Hospital for a fasting blood draw to test my glucose levels. We then went for breakfast at the Koa Pancake House.
Art had me go first to place my order. When I got to the counter, the very friendly middle aged lady asked, "What would you like Mama?"
Mama? I look old enough to be her "Mama"? What happened to "Auntie?" Auntie sounds younger, right? Well, I'm glad she didn't call me "Grandma."
Actually, calling patrons Auntie is just the friendly island way of speaking. I've never heard anyone here call me "Sweetie" like they used to on the mainland.
I ordered my Breakfast Plate which came with 2 eggs (I like it easy over or is it over easy?), bacon, 3 pancakes and coffee. It's what I always order because I otherwise NEVER get to eat bacon. I eat one of the pancakes and Art always eats the other two.
Then Art went up and told her he just wanted a side order of 2 eggs and coffee. She burst out laughing. I couldn't figure out what was so funny until later. 🙄
OK, OK, I get it.
Art did eat two of my three pancakes. Honest! (I had to get the photo above online because it didn't occur to me to take a photo of my food.) I ate only one pancake. Granted, Art ate only one of my bacon strips. 😁
Ah well... I want you to know my A1c was much improved (before the breakfast). Phew! Hmmm... But then... I did have that pancake with syrup, didn't I?
My mouth is close to watering. I must go down for breakfast, but I am afraid that it will only be cold cereal. 😕

ReplyDeleteMe again, also my paternal grandma was 40 when I her first grandchild came along so she wouldn't let me call her grandma just auntie all her life. Now she's gone I call her grandma. I didn't become a grandmother till 58 and couldn't wait to be called grandma. Now I hate it when doctor's nurses or office call me young lady!

ReplyDeleteOh, my, I did wonder how in the world you ate all that food! Glad you explained yourself. But, did you eat the two eggs? I would have just ordered bacon as I hate eggs and pancakes are not a favorite. I'm super picky about how pancakes are made. I did have French toast, though, the other day when the Ladies Who Lunch did brunch. I never get French toast any more so it was a super treat.

DeleteI guess she caught on to Art and his designs on your two pancakes. Why order your own. My common question to Tom is "Are you going to order fries with that?" because I want some fries but we never eat all of them and if he gets the fries then I can get a different side. :-)

ReplyDeleteI didn't get the eggs either. Did she figure out that you were sharing a meal? (which is very smart in my opinion, way too much food!) Glad your number was better! In my area, it's "hon" rather than "Mama" or "Auntie."

ReplyDeleteWell, I got it as DH and I always share! He usually orders a whole meal and I order a side dish... then we share. And I agree with Kathy G that most restaurants serve very large portions - definitely enough to share. And although I've never been called "mama or auntie" when out, I know that I don't care for "sweetie or young lady".
ReplyDeleteI am guessing the counter lady was Filipino? It is very common for them to call me "Mama" as a term of being nice and respectful. I do like it when people call me "Aunty" but I cringe when young people call me by my first name. Different upbringing all around.
ReplyDeleteI was 40ish when a 20ish local guy called me auntie. I was beyond shocked. I thought am I THAT old when I moved into auntie territory. Neighbors below me, their little kid called me grandma. Totally annoyed. Her grandma is younger than me (50 ish??) so okay but I don't have to like it. At the store a clerk called me Grandma and I yelled at her. I was so PO'd. I told her I don't have kids. She tried calling me another titles and I told her leave it. I hate the local style of calling elders by familiar terms. I don't need reminders I am old. There are a bunch of childless women who are very offended by these terms. Or imagine you.are an infertile woman. Not everyone embraces it and I call others Sir or Madam/Lady. I know I'm fighting an uphill battle and I kinda, sorta accept Aunty now, but I dislike it. BTW I notice on a racial divide, one race calls older women mama. Hate that too but in their culture It's a sign of respect. GGGRR. BB

ReplyDeleteSuch good news about your A1C, good on you. One of the clerks in my sister's favorite grocery calls her "Mama," that was the first time I'd heard that. Sis is 78 and she kind of liked it. I'm OK with most of the casual names as long as no one i swearing at me, :-).

ReplyDeleteAuntie sounds or feels much better to me. There was an aid when my mom was in a rehab center who called all the ladies Mama and it felt like she just couldn’t be bothered to learn their names and they were all the same to her. I know how you feel about bacon! It’s one of my favorite treats to have on the rare occasions we go out for breakfast.

ReplyDeleteI think Mama is just a generic term of respect in some cultures. It took me a while to learn that Auntie and Uncle in Hawaii refers sometimes to actual aunts and uncles, but is mostly a term of respect in Hawaii for other adults in your life, besides the adults or elders you live with. In the Kansas City Hawaiian Civic Club, I hear many refer to each other as Auntie or Uncle when they are not related. Yep, ,usually reserved for someone on the "oldish" side of age bracketing.
