Trying to Remember

Quite a long while ago, someone sent this picture to me and I tried to remember WHAT our old phone number used to be when I was growing up.

I showed it to Art and he said that's why he used to choose his old phone number for some of his passwords.

I can never remember any of my passwords, especially because I've changed several of them. I tried to remember my childhood phone # and couldn't remember that either!!! Arrghhh!!! 😖 I could remember two of my high school friends' numbers though.

So I decided to ask my baby brother and he texted right away saying, "67- 8739."

"Wait," I said. "Wasn't it 677?" I thought I had him there.

He answered, "No. They added the extra 7 in the 60's."

Like I said... my memory is very, very faulty. It's becoming more and more difficult to write these posts because the right word just won't come to me (I think they call it word retrieval.)....

......until the next day (maybe).

  1. I still remember my phone number as a kid! But I gave up several years ago trying to remember all my passwords with ever changing security rules. I have a password manage (LastPass) that remembers them all for me so I just have to remember one. That seems much more manageable.

  2. That’s why I have lots of posts in draft form…..waiting for me to add the word I couldn’t remember when I first wrote it:)

  3. Yes, memory. We've been talking about that lately. We are pretty isolated, and happy to host our kids this week. (ツ) from Cottage Country Ontario , ON, Canada!

  4. I can remember my childhood # and my friend’s. The others are pretty well forgotten, often including my current one. It’s a good idea for a pw though.

  5. I do remember our childhood phone number... and address (and have used it for a password 'in the past' as it seems to be something forever stuck in my brain). I find it helps to use a combination of old memories (like poems or sayings that live in my head and possibly mine alone) for passwords.

  7. I remember my telephone number from the house in Kensington, MD where we lived from during elementary school and junior high. WH6 - 6006. An easy one. Don't recall the one in GA where we moved for two years or the one in VA where I finished high school.

  9. Hi Kay, yes I remember the phone number because it was active until just this past Saturday when I had it closed by the carrier.
I will miss it, but since I have used it for many years, it will probably stick in my mind for a while. There is another phone number the family used too and I still remember it. NOTE to folks: probably best not to publish any sensitive info in your replies. You never know who is reading .

  11. 434-2635, but ask me any number since then, nah. Ask me anybody else's number -- not a chance I could come up with it. If I am in a situation where I can't press your name in my contacts list, you are not going to be hearing from me. But, really, it's names I go blank on -- although I can't say that's a new development at all.

  12. I guess it's comforting to see that so many of us are dealing with memory issues. I immediately identified with not being able to come up with a word to finish a sentence or post. And names! Oh my.
I am experiencing a bit of brain fog, and a lot of sinus headaches since having Covid, so remembering is even more difficult right now. I do remember our first telephone "number" though. I was a wall crank phone, no number, just two shorts and a long. When that was the ring on our party line, then we answered it. Telephone calls were rare.

  13. My childhood phone # was 1434-J. My grandmother's was 737-M.

  14. I remember my childhood phone number because my mom still has it, although when I was little it was Thornwall 5, and now it's 845. I still recall my uncle's # as Cherry 2 versus the 242 it's become currently. For some reason letters are easier for me than numbers in the retrieval system.

  15. Your brain is doing better than mine: I have one of those little alphabetized booklets where I write all my passwords. No way I'm going to try and remember all of them. My childhood phone number was Vi something. The Vi stood for Victor. I don't even have my son's number memorized. I have to look it up on my phone. Linda in Kansas

  16. I can't remember my childhood phone number but I do remember my best (and worst) friend's phone number in Palolo. I really can't remember current numbers because they are all in my phone and Siri dials for me. Scary how dependent I am on it.

  21. Cool post. Brain fog is getting more real daily. I remember dad always going "whatchamacallit " every time he forgot. Now I understand. sigh. Like the idea of using old numbers as passwords. My home number 7372334. Easy peasy. My childhood address was 1650 Kalakaua. Now it's a condo. :( Right behind Don Q.on Kaheka. That whole high.density area was my childhood stomping ground and that area was empty. No condos, no mini malls, nothing. Before they built Holiday Mart, it was Kapiolani Drive Inn Theatre. I use to watch the screen from my bedroom but alas no sound so not worth it. Then it was demolished and became our playground. We'd cut right across to Ala Moana Center when it got built. BB

  22. My childhood phone number and address are my password fodder.

  23. I often use the thesaurus that comes with my dictionary app on my laptop to find the word that just won't come. It really helps. I don't remember my old phone numbers or passwords, either. :-)

  24. We lived in a rural area with a very archaic phone system. It was a party line. Our number was 16-2 which means that we were on line 12 and we responded to two short rings. The system was run by hand. So I wonder if 16-2 would work.

  25. I also remember our childhood phone numbers and addresses. My parents finally decided to get a telephone when I was eight--$2 per month for telephone rental and local service. We had that number through three moves (real estate was my parents pathway to the American dream), until I was 13. They had that number through two more moves into the late 1970s and relocation to another state.

For some reason, I do not recall my next two phone numbers. The first was an apartment at university, and it really was my roommate's phone more than mine, at least in terms of useage! We split the basic charges and paid personal toll calls. The other was my apartment after graduation, until I purchased my first house. All numbers and addresses thereafter seem to be engraved on my brain. Obviously, did not use the phone much during those first five years aeay from home! lol

Unfortunately, with the exception of that brief period, I remember telephone numbers and addresses from the late 1950s forward. Only one set, from the early 1970s, is still valid. I wish all of the outdated information could be removed from my brain! I'm tired of sifting through it! 🙃

    1. I am so impressed. I guess my brain can only hold so much and it seems to be shrinking. Sigh...
