Last week Wednesday, something weird happened with HECO (Hawaiian Electric Company) in the late afternoon. I was working on my computer and it just died. I rebooted the system and once again it died. It took me several tries before I realized that something was goofy with the electricity and I probably should turn off my computer before something really bad happened even though we have a surge protector on it.
Everything stabilized after a couple of hours of the lights flickering on and off, etc. But then, the TV wouldn't turn on. There was a big red X on the screen. We watch the evening news while we have our dinner, but with no TV, ended up just talking to each other.
We usually watch TV after dinner, but with no TV we read a book and went to sleep early. I actually got a good nights sleep.
The following day, Art called Hawaiian Telcom and they scheduled a technician to come out on Friday. Sooo... we had another evening of no TV news and more talking and reading and going to bed early.
On Friday, Dean of Hawaiian Telcom arrived. He was the absolute friendliest, cutest guy.
He did all kinds of tests (while explaining everything) on the machines and taught us how to press the middle and bottom button simultaneously while pulling out the power cord. And putting in the power cord again while holding those two buttons.
I think that's what he said. Art would know.
Anyway, he said our modem had just gotten old and died.
But yes, he said that HECO's electrical problem probably was the final straw that caused our old modem to give up its last breath.
Dean then checked all our TVs to make sure they were now working and he was cheerfully on his way before telling us where their office was.
I told him Spectrum was often in the neighborhood trying to entice customers away. I told Dean, he's just made us happy to stay with Hawaiian Telcom. 😄

I have Cox Complete Care. That costs me $10.00 a month and any time anything goes wrong with either of my two computers or the TV, there is no additional charge at all. They download a tech on the computers and they take it over and fix whatever has gone wrong. For the TV.they come here and make a service call and fix it and there is no additional charge. Caney has a terrible Wifi and they are the only community in the entire county that did not sign up for an additional Wifi signal to fix that...
ReplyDeleteGood you got it fixed we need our tvs
ReplyDeleteJust think a few more days and you would have gotten use to your new routine which sounded pretty good. Talk, read and great night's sleep. Maybe schedule such a day once a week for mental health:) Glad however that all is back working again. We do need to know what is going on in the world, even if it usually distressed us.
ReplyDeleteWe are in a part of the world where there is only one internet and television choice and as one might expect, it is extremely pricey compared to what others pay. But at long last another competitor is around laying fiber optics so I hope things will get more competitive in the future.
ReplyDeleteIt's always nice to hear about good customer service.
ReplyDeleteWatching the news while eating -- isn't that a recipe for indigestion?
Glad that it was all fixed with no big expense... and always nice to have a friendly efficient tech. We too watch the news while we eat supper... or at least part of it, sometimes we just turn it off.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you made the best of your No TV evenings!
ReplyDeleteI'm with attt
ReplyDeleteI just have my laptop as my screen, and in the evenings I watch Korean dramas. When I see other people's TV screen, I am mesmerized with the size and clarity.
ReplyDeleteGood service is a blessing, for sure.
ReplyDeleteMaybe so is being forced to talk. :-)
We have always watched the news during dinner too.
I no longer have anything but basic service with Netflix. $11 a month.
ReplyDeleteIt's very frustrating when systems go down. We have a tight routine and when that is upset we're lost.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it got fixed without too much hassle, and made for an interesting post! :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad you got your TV fixed without much a problem. With the heat, humidity and not feeling good, TV has been my life at night!
ReplyDeleteI have a television but only use it to watch movies.
ReplyDeleteLin says I love how you say without the news, you talked to each other. We watch the news during lunch and dinner and don't talk...lol! Glad you got it fixed.
ReplyDeleteGlad you knew what to do when there was no TV -- ha!
