I'm not a big sports fan, but I have heard of Brett Favre. Have you heard the latest news about him? You already know he's a big time millionaire football player, right? (Uuuummmm.... He's also a Trump supporter.)

The State of Mississippi is suing former NFL quarterback and Hall of Famer Brett Favre and others, alleging they misspent millions of dollars that had been allocated for welfare.
Newly-revealed text messages from 2017 indicate that former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, who left office in 2020, was aware of the arrangement, and that the money that was intended to help low-income families. After being funneled through a nonprofit, it eventually went to Favre to help build a volleyball facility at the University of Southern Mississippi, the lawsuit alleges.

Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard, his spouse and two adult children are giving away their ownership in the apparel maker he started some 50 years ago, dedicating all profits from the company to projects and organizations that will protect wild land and biodiversity and fight the climate crisis.The company is worth about $3 billion, according to the New York Times. So there you have it. Two very rich people and what they did with money. As for Favre, it wasn't even his money. He actually stole from the poor to give to himself (to build a volleyball arena for his daughter's college) and then said he didn't know what was happening even though there are text messages that prove he did.
It's really darn pathetic. Really, really pathetic.
It definitely is pathetic! Too many rich people misuse the money for the poor. Greed!
ReplyDeleteI saw that Brett Favre news earlier this week, just awful. I hope he at least has enough humanity within himself to be embarrassed and disgusted with his selfish actions. Probably not. On the other hand, loved the Patagonia story. For every a--hole like Jeff Bezos, spending 100 million to take a single trip to outer space, there are true humanitarians like Bill Gates giving up billions.

ReplyDeleteI guess I'm not ready to condemn Favre just yet. To me, reading those two text messages out of the context of the Governor, it sounds like he just wanted to remain anonymous in a deal to build a new volleyball building for his daughter's college. The article says several times that the money was funneled through a non-profit organization before given to Favre so he may well indeed not have known about it coming from the Temporary Assistant for Needy Family program before that.
ReplyDeleteTo me, the more damming information is that he was paid $1.1 million for engagements he evidently never attended. That is kind of hard to defend especially since he only paid back the money after he was called out on it. I suppose one could make an argument that when you are as rich as him, perhaps you don't notice $1.1 million suddenly appearing in your bank accounts because you have accountants to deposit checks and manage your accounts.
I'm always cautious as condemning people over the internet when I'm not privy to all the facts in the case. He may very well be guilty but I'm not going to toss the proverbial first stone until I see more evidence.
Sorry, Ed, but your hopes that Favre was unaware won't wash if you dig a little deeper. He wrote one email specifically asking if the source of the money might ever be revealed. So he definitely knew.

ReplyDeleteIn general I'm woth Ed on this. From what I have read the non profit did their due diligence, knew what he was doing with the money and approved its distribution. I'd also Ike to know if the facility could have bern built without the money and whose using it. Girls sports in any level is hopelessly underfunded and there is almost no allowance for scolarships.
