One of Art's cousins went to Seattle and got to try an apple called Cosmic Crisp. She liked it so much that she brought some back and gave us several to try. We usually buy an apple called Envy that is very popular here in Hawaii. It was my Zumba buddies (before the pandemic halted the classes) that introduced me to Envy so that's what we buy all the time from Sam's Club. It's a little bit on the pricier side, but not bad.
Well, after trying the Cosmic Crisp, we decided it was just as crispy as Envy and tasted almost the same. That's what Art said anyway because my sense of taste is very bad now. However, I can tell you it IS very crispy.
When we went to Sam's Club recently, they didn't have Envy, BUT they had Cosmic Crisp! What a surprise! And it was a couple of dollars cheaper for the big bag than Envy.
Art and I share an apple every day at lunch. It's to balance out the unhealthier teeny bit of potato chips we also have with our sandwich.
I wonder how long the Cosmic Crisp season will last. Ah well... we'll enjoy it while we can.

Oh darn!
Although most of the apples were fine, too many were brown and discolored on the inside. Surprisingly, it was still relatively crisp, but I had to toss them out. I wonder if that's why they were selling them for a lower price.
We went back to Sam's Club another day and saw they had Envy, BUT they were NOT crispy. What the heck! This is usually the time we went apple picking in Illinois. Why are these not great?
We are Honeycrisp fans, but they are not fully available at the moment. I haven’t seen your Cosmic Crisp but Evy are available here. Honeycrisp is still tops for us, however.
ReplyDeleteCosmic Crisp are my favorite apple, and I too had one in a batch that was bad, but only one out of a whole bag. I like to pick out my own apples rather than get them in a bag. :-)
ReplyDeleteI purchased Kinder Krisp from a local orchard in early September. There are very small apples. Recently also got a bag of the orchard's Gala apples at the local grocery store.
ReplyDeleteWe have Envy here but not Cosmic. However, I am totally devoted to Honeycrisp when I can get it, which is now most of the time.
ReplyDeleteDon't have much choice here but I have had great success with Organic Galas. Getting a not up to snuff one is really disappointing.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is because they were either picked very early, for shipment to Hawaii or are last year's crop.
ReplyDeleteCosmics are my favorite! I'm not a fan of Honey Crisp because of the sweetness and the texture but love the crispness and little bit of tartness. That brown inside surprises me. Even when cut, Cosmics are very, very slow to brown.
ReplyDeleteI am a terrible fruit buyer - I buy what is on sale and then it goes bad because I don't eat it. However, the next time I buy Envy apples on sale (or if they have Cosmic Crisps), I will cut into them. It sounds like they would be great sliced up in salads.
ReplyDeleteIt is apple season here. I hope to get out to an orchard this weekend. We had a neighbor who had an old variety growing in his yard -- Northern Spy, the bery best for baking IMO. NOw I and the neighbor have both moved away and they are hard to find.

ReplyDeleteWe use Gala, Honeycrisp, and recently Ambrosia... but have bad batches a lot lately (all brown on inside while outside looks fine). I was beginning to wonder if apple crops were experiencing problems lately? And we never buy in bags, usually just 2 or 3 each week. I threw the last 2 away... and had just bought them.

ReplyDeleteWhen we buy big apples, not bagged, we share one a day at lunch too. It is apple season but it's hard to know if you are getting new crop or last years. During the winter we usually buy bagged Gala or Fuji. They are small and we get one each. We go for the better price. I had a few lately that were brownish inside but they tasted OK and we ate them anyway.
ReplyDeleteI like the "crisp" varieties, and as for the brown edges, I spread peanut butter on them and eat them anyway.
ReplyDeleteA lot of produce is of poor quality these days. Very little fruit here was worth buying this summer.
ReplyDeleteLin says buying fruit is always a risk-sometimes they just don't ripen or too soon. Right now we are enjoying peaches from a local fruit market open only in the summer time.

ReplyDeleteThose are apples from the previous season that have been kept in cold storage and now off-loaded to you out there in Hawaii. The new crop of apples is just arriving in our markets here, and I am very careful to always select apples that have NOT been in cold storage.
